Royal Couple get articles to go Whoosh Clunk/Readers disgust at Kate

But fortunately Jo Morais captured this one before that happened, bravo!

I do think Kate needs to understand that if we are to be assaulted in the supermarket by front page news of her sex life or worse still, the sex life she imagines for Madeleine, folk deserve the right to reply

Madeleine McCann’s Parents: The Real Royal Couple?

10 MAY 2011 | POSTED BY JOANA MORAIS LEAVE A COMMENT

Four years after a British girl disappeared, there are more questions than answers

by Chris Freind

April was a busy time for the Royal Couple.

Preparations had been underway for months to deal with all the publicity that was sure to come. Facebook pages were established, marketing pieces created, a book written and carefully scripted interviews arranged, as publicists and advisors worked round-the-clock for the famous British duo. No detail was too small when planning such a momentous event, as the global media once again turned its focus on two of Great Britain’s most…interesting people.

Most amazing, all of this was accomplished despite the distractions caused by the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

May 3rd marked the fourth anniversary of the disappearance of then-3-year-old Madeleine McCann, who disappeared from a resort in southern Portugal because her parents chose to leave her — and her two younger twin siblings — alone in an unlocked room while they ate and drank the night away with friends.

But when you’re Gerry and Kate McCann, you take a backseat to no one, and certainly no wedding is going to upstage your “anniversary.” And so, in typical McCann fashion, they put on another strong display of offense in the ongoing “search” — not so much for their missing daughter, but for self-promoting headlines.

Who can blame them? Playing defense is no fun, doesn’t raise money nor generate publicity. And best of all, blaming everyone but themselves for an eminently preventable tragedy allows the McCanns to ignore reality about a poor little girl’s horrible fate.

*****

For the folks needing a refresher, you read it right. The McCanns, both physicians from Rothley, Leicestershire, in England, left their three children — with a COMBINED age of seven — alone, night after night, in their ground-floor resort apartment. Despite ample financial resources, they chose not to bring a nanny and refused to utilize the resort’s babysitting services.

Instead, they deemed it safer for the children to go it on their own, entrusting Madeleine to get her siblings and herself to safety in the event of a fire — hence the alleged reason for the unlocked door. Hey, I’m all for self-reliance, but, she was 3!

The story perpetuated by the McCanns is that Madeleine was kidnapped, despite virtually no evidence to support that claim. But the tragic nature of a girl gone missing gained international attention, and the search was on. Well, at least by the people who were actually out there looking for Madeleine.

Gerry and Kate took a different approach. Rather than get bogged down in the grunt work of looking for their daughter in places she might actually be, the parents decided that becoming international globetrotting celebrities was a lot more fun. Putting blood, sweat and tears into finding a missing child is tough, but hanging out with celebs and dignitaries is, well, cool!

So they arranged a private audience with the Pope, traveled to the United States to meet with America’s top leaders, kept web diaries about Gerry’s daily jogs, and threw lavish affairs. Of course, if Madeleine really had been kidnapped, she wouldn’t be in America, at black-tie events or in the Vatican.

If only they had thought to turn the “Find Madeleine” campaign into a money-maker! Oh wait, they did. To the tune of millions. And the result? To this day, many more questions than answers.

Despite being named suspects by the Portuguese police based on evidence that raised eyebrows — inconsistencies in G and K’s stories; elite dogs, trained to identify death, providing positive responses in Madeleine’s room; reports of Madeleine’s blood found in the trunk of a car the McCanns’ rented 25 days AFTER she disappeared; more blood discovered behind a sofa in the apartment, to name just a few — the case was eventually suspended without any arrest. And for that, we can thank the British government that exerted enormous pressure on the Portuguese.

With the complicity of the British media, everyone but the parents was blamed for Madeleine’s disappearance. The Portuguese detectives bumbled the investigation, the resort’s security was too lax, leads weren’t followed up in a timely fashion. And as numerous publications discovered, anyone who dared question the McCanns’ role were slapped with libel lawsuits by England’s most powerful barristers. And don’t forget the lead Portuguese investigator who was legally banned from giving interviews and publishing his book courtesy of Team McCann (those rulings were subsequently overturned) and was sued for millions in “damages.”

Kate’s book on the affair, (in which rumors spread that she was assisted by world-famous Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling) will be released this week. In it, she blamed the resort restaurant for making a note in their reservation book that the McCanns wanted a table within sight of the room, since the children would be alone.

“[The reservation] book was by definition accessible to all staff and, albeit unintentionally, probably to guests and visitors, too…To my horror, I saw that, no doubt in all innocence, the receptionist had added that we wanted to eat close to our apartments as we were leaving our young children alone there and checking on them intermittently.”

Nice try, Kate. But somehow, you forgot to mention the “horror” your daughter must have felt after being abandoned by her parents night after night, left alone in an unfamiliar environment in a foreign nation. And you also conveniently left out the fact that you couldn’t see the apartment from your table anyway, due to the six-foot wall obstructing the view. Translation: the tapas were more important than your three children, two of whom, interestingly enough, weren’t “kidnapped.”

So we’re supposed to believe that a child kidnapper just happened to be dining at the resort’s restaurant that night, on the off-chance some British couple’s child-care arrangements (or lack thereof) would be recorded in the restaurant’s reservation book? Which, by the way, is usually kept behind a desk, not in public view.

Either that, or someone on the kitchen staff, waiting in the wings for one of the McCanns to return from allegedly “checking” on the children. Maybe that’s why the tapas were so late in being served!

Frankly, I’m surprised that Osama bin Laden snatching Madeleine wasn’t in the book as a potential theory. Or that evil Voldemort from Harry Potter wasn’t somehow responsible.

Which brings us back to Rowling.

After hundreds of articles stating that Rowling was helping Kate write the book, the family spokesman finally got around to stating that Rowling did not, in fact, have ANY role in the book.

As with most things McCann, the facts here are loose and the truth sketchy. But as they say, “Any publicity is good publicity!” And Team McCann rolls on, garnering headlines and raking in the dough.

*****

Perhaps most ironic is Kate’s stated reason for the book:

“My reason…is simple, to give an account of the truth.”

Rowling’s help or not, discovering the real story behind the disappearance of little Madeleine McCann will take more than wizards and magic. Too bad we don’t have one of Harry Potter’s Remembralls, though, which fans will recall is the clear orb containing smoke that turns red when detecting that the user has forgotten something.

In Gerry and Kate McCann’s case, I’m betting the Remembrall would be glowing red-hot, since it seems they have forgotten the only thing that can help Maddie.

The real truth.

Why do these parents think they should have been treated any different from any other parents in this situation? The police's job is to investigate all options and far from them bullying them they had a duty to the missing child to question them as they would the parents of any other missing child. The fact that their sensibilities were offended, should not have mattered one jot to them if they had any thoughts of helping the police and ultimately their child.

The Portugese police did all they could to find Madeleine. After finding no evidence of an abduction it was normal procedure to question the parents.

While i hope she is still alive and in good health and being well cared for people should still realise that she was left alone while parents went for a meal. Regardless of situation you do not leave a child alone.

I do wish people would stop saying the McCann’s made a mistake. They didn’t. Making a mistake is putting three sugars in your tea instead of two, or wearing odd socks. These people took a decision based on what they thought was acceptable behaviour. They took that decision previously, they took it on the night and if nothing had happened they would have taken it again and again. A deliberate act is not a mistake.

How anyone can sympathize with the McCanns is beyond me. Do these people ( the ones that get all the red arrows) not realise that if it wasn't for the selfish and irresponsible behaviour of the McCanns that poor Maddie would still be alive. It's not like it was a one off when leaving their 3 very young children alone, whilst they wined and dined the night away. Even when their children woke up crying one night to find their parents weren't there, it didn't stop them leaving the poor mites on their own. How disgusting is that! These two let their poor daughter down in the worse possible way and yet she talks about 'maternal instincts' . God you just couldn't make it up could you.

I feel very sorry for McCanns and I hope their child will be found. But I cannot understand how the details about their sex life can help Madeline. It is always good to have a book advirtised but DM have published so much of it - now no need to buy the book because we already know everything including private details.

The video of the dogs detecting scents in the apartment is very striking though. Believing something terrible happened to Maddie in the apartment is not ridiculous. That's not to say the parents were involved though. I personally would want everything tested and retested to find some clues. It would be hard to dismiss such possibilities. I wonder if there are any super-injunctions that relate to this case? Poor Maddie.

So many perfect Parents writing! Kate & Gerry could have been asleep in the other bedroom and it may still have happen - I recall call the little girl abducted from a tent in her garden while sleeping one summer night. The knife is in deep no need for the evil public to twist it - enough!- Michael J Lee, Sheffield UK-------------------------------------But that's just the point. They weren't sleeping in the other bedrom were they? They were out drinking and having a good time whilst leaving three babies unattended. What if there had been a fire or one of the babies had woken up vomiting or choking. You don't need to be a perfect parent to realise you do NOT leave babies without a competent babysitter.

My heart aches for Madeleine and as much as I can't think of a worse thing than to lose a child, I find it very difficult to have sympathy for these utterly selfish parents who repeatedly left 3 babies alone despite the fact that Madeleine told her mother that they awoke and cried out for her. It took me a while to work out Kate's chant (very surprised at the choice of words for an educated G.P.) and now she is talking about her sex life! Says a lot about her/them really, ME ME ME! Bless you Madeleine.

They turned down the baby sitting service that was offered, left the chidren over and over again whilst they went to eat and drink with friends, instead of eating together earlier in the day as a family unit. Now she wants me to read that she could not make love to her husband!!! To much information about something that is totally irrelevant to the fact that her daughter has payed the price for their terrible parenting. My thoughts are with one person only in this terrible situation.

'The McCanns made a mistake with terrible consequences. I have four children aged between 9 and 19 and when I look back there were times when I was not a perfect parent - it only takes a moment of inattention and an accident happens.'- b.brownlow, co.antrim n.ireland Sadly, this wasn't a 'moment of inattention', if you read yesterday's DM, it's clear it was at least two consecutive nights' of inattention. The previous night, they were out until 11.50pm while their kids were alone in the apartment. And even when Maddie said that nobody came when she cried that night, still they went out alone. I do get the feeling that if this wasn't a middle class family, the reaction towards the McCanns would be far less sympathetic. That said, nobody would ever wish this horrific situation on any parent, however irresponsible. And it's clear that the McCanns feel a terrible guilt as to what happened, and regret their irresponsibility every moment of everyday.

i would have thought that being haunted by the thought of her daughter being in the hands of a peadophile would have been the worst thing to deal with and NOT second to kate's lack of sex drive that she says was the 1st on her list of worries. AND maybe if she and jerry had been as ferrocious in their maternal/paternal feelings instead of wanting to be 'sociable' or more like afraid of missing out on a good time with friends then this little girl would not have been taken. if i were in her shoes i would be so consumed with guilt that i doubt i would be able to travel the world for whatever reason, or god forbid go and get my highlights done.

@Michael J Lee: There is a huge difference between being out of the apartment and leaving your children unattended, and being in the room next door. No parents are "perfect" but the parents (and non-parents) who are appalled at children being left on their own for hours, in an unlocked property, in a foreign country, just so the McCanns can socialise, are pretty damn near perfect - and let's throw in the words "responsible" and "selfless". Anyone who says differently either a) do not have children and therefore do not know the lengths you will go to to protect your children or b) are selfish and ignorant.

I was starting to feel badly for the parents after reading the little bit posted above of how hard it was that night for them, but it must have been much worse for Little Maddie when she realized she was kidnapped and whatever happened to her afterwards. I would feel more for the parents if they publicly said that they made a huge mistake repeatedly leaving their young children alone in a hotel apartment with the patio door unlocked. As parents, they were in charge of Maddie's safety. What's done is done the Maddie McCann case keeps resurfacing and that is a major sticking point.

Does the photo by the pool look like the same child in the blue football shirt? Does the 'tennis court' photo look anything like the photo they are still using now (the close-up of Maddies face with the very big eyes)? No, all of these photos look like different children....so no wonder the policeman couldn't recognise her.

She says her 'ferocious maternal instinct’ to protect her child was more powerful than her own fear. That apartment was on the main road. You have to go out of the complex - walk round to a gate on the ground floor. They left the door unlocked - (Maddie could have opened the door on her own and got lost) I would feel unsafe as an adult in an open apartment like that. "Maternal instinct" - nothing left to say.

Wicked and foolish of people to blame the McCanns. A kidnapper sneaked into their flat to steal their child. There are kids out and about all over the world, walking home from school, playing in countryside, at home alone - are kidnappers to be exonerated because they're able to get their hands on children? Who here exonerates paedophile murderer Ian Huntley and blames the parents because the 2 girls were out walking alone? Anybody? Here in rural France, you often see kids walking or cycling alone, out playing around the outskirts of the village alone or in twos. It's called living. ALL kids spend some time alone at home or outside as they grow up. - cath, France, 10/5/2011 What, you see two and three year olds walking and playing alone in the countryside? at home alone? Because that is how old the McCann children were! The two Soham girls were ten, they were not toddlers, and if they had been pre-school age and out alone their parents would have been prosecuted for neglect.

The McCanns made a mistake with terrible consequences. I have four children aged between 9 and 19 and when I look back there were times when I was not a perfect parent - it only takes a moment of inattention and an accident happens. I had my 3 year old daughter in the supermarket trolley years ago, I was distracted and she was gone. A man was wheeling her out of the shop You where distracted for a moment, The McCanns left 2 2 year old and a 3 year old for hours every evening because while the free day care was good enough to use they would not use the childcare they had to pay for.

I think this book needs to read in its entirety, to get a proper perspective, rather than in sensationalist extracts. Having said that, I have to say I find Kate McCann's almost complete lack of personal insight, self knowledge, call it what you will, absolutely breathtaking. I remember how the public mood shifted, as soon as it was revealed how those children had been left alone, my sympathy for the adults disappeared for sure. I have since always found their manner hard to take, although I know we are all different! However, in this extract,Kate refers to her 'ferocious maternal instinct' to protect her child. Can she really not see how ridiculous this sounds in the face of their willingness to leave those children alone, night after night, even after she knew they had been upset and calling for their mother. She even appears to try and blame the reception for leaving a note with details of the McCann's movements to be seen by a passing paedophile. Poor Madeleine.

The knife is in deep no need for the evil public to twist it - enough! - Michael J Lee, Sheffield UK, 10/5/2011 12:43 I don't think so Michael as they locked the door to the patio when THEY were home - but left it open when they were OUT so they didn't wake the children when they went to check on them by rattling keys in the lock!! I guarantee they always lock their cars though when they leave them unattended to stop someone stealing them!

I'm suprised that they haven't yet picked up on the fact that the public is tiring of their constant bleating to the press. Though i'm sure all of us are very sorry for their loss of child,, there comes a point when enough is enough and people stop wanting to know.

I feel incredibly sorry for the McCanns at losing their child, but I don't feel sorry for them in the way they left their children alone, so they could go off and drink, eat and be merry. You just don't leave your child or children alone like that - it's common sense! My daughter is 9 years old and I wouldn't even think of allowing her to go out on her own, even if she was with friends or leave her alone so I could go out with my friends. And as for telling people you couldn't have an intimate life with your husband, well, that's just too much information and needs to be kept private.

The question is who the hell has taken this little girl and where on earth is she??? Irrespective of the parents, I just hope that she is found safe and well. God forbid what may or may not have happened to that beautiful INNOCENT little girl.

I don't have children yet as I am too selfish and self centred, if only the McCanns had the foresight to think the same way, the UNDENIABLE FACTS are, they LEFT their children alone, NOT EVEN in their own home with Neighbours / Friends around, IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY, I really hope Maddy is found one day and one way or another it's at an end. I have genuine disgust for this woman and have from the start, with each and every PR stunt of me, me , me the contempt just grows, way to go Mrs McCann, make a career out of ending your daughters life as she knew it or even worse permenantly.

This is such an awful case and I do feel sorry for the McCanns but I will never be able to get over the fact that they left their children alone. Maybe I could understand it a bit more if it had been the last night of the holiday and they decided to do it on the spur of the moment so they could have some time on their own - but the fact is they did this every single night of the holiday - even after Madeleine had said to her mother on the morning of her abduction 'why didn't you come when Sean and I cried last night'. I can't believe they still went out knowing their kids had been calling for them. Anyone with children knows that just because your children go off to sleep ok doesn't mean that they won't wake up a couple of hours later wanting their mummy and daddy. Having said that they have to live with not having their daughter with them every single day - I suppose that is punishment enough.

Whilst I feel for the McCanns, I don't understand why they were so offended and seemingly uncooperative. It's normal for parents in these situations to be treated as suspects, until evidence is sifted through. This disappearance is a complete and utter puzzle and I hope the truth is discovered one day, for the peace of mind of everyone involved. We certainly don't need to hear about the McCanns' sex lives. Their children will read this book one day, for heaven's sake. But they have my sympathy for the torment they are going through, whether it is partly of their own making or not.

This real life saga is well beyond its best buy date. The couple messed up and were more interested in going out partying than having their kids with them and the end result was very unfortunate. Any parent who leaves thir kids alone is asking for trouble and if the place had caught fire, all the kids would now be dead. Whatever happened to parental responsibility as we might not expect it on Labours feral estates but these two were professional people ! Time to move on and leave this vocal couple to their own devices as most of us are fed up seeing them in the news.

In my opinion the McCanns have always seemed a bit arrogant probably because they have good jobs, money etc.I always feel that they blame someone else for Maddies disappearence when this would never have happened if they had put their childrens safety and well being ahead of they own needs to have grown up dinners.I suppose being who they are they never thought something like that could ever happen to them and that they had a given right to think it was absolutely fine to leave their children unattended. Their plight is heartbreaking but their way of trying to help their daughter has been all wrong and has alienated the people who could've helped.

So whether it be an unwanted daughter who needs to be "abducted" or an unwanted American writer giving a very good account that much better resembles the truth, Team McCann can make these things disappear before your very eyes.

I am sure the lack of control they can bring to bear on the internet though must be a tad frustrating for them. To my knowledge Mr Freind's excellent article is now on at least four blogs/fora. All those legal costs being expended and does it cool the hot tempers of either Kate or Gerry McScam? I doubt it!

Seems to me that mentioning the sex life aside, that "ferocious maternal instinct" was not wise, Kate.

Hi Viv

Oh dear this goes from bad to worse, whoever thought it was a good idea to serialise the book in the papers made a terrible mistake.

Kate has said it was only after the kidnapping that they realised their ground floor apartment was an easy target for anyone wanting to break in.

IMO it would not have been an easy target for a break in unless it is true that they did leave the patio door open every evening, which personally I don't believe.

Kate has released the information in her book that Madeleine could not have wandered, she states how could Madeleine have opened the window and shutter and climbed out. Now why has Kate not mentioned in her book, Madeleine could have walked out of the open patio door?

Hiya Di

I am sure lots of people are going to notice that every time Kate tells the story it is different.

In her original police statement 4/3/07, she entered via the rear patio door that had been left open. But by November when she went on Panorama she was saying "they broke in and stole Madeleine".

In Oprah we get the windows and curtains being open and her entering via the rear patio door.

And now, as you say, she wants to forget the open patio door.

Is Kate a deranged and confused liar? At the very least that is what people are going to think.

It would be good if Goncalo wrote further comparing and contrasting all of her varying accounts and explaining that in his 27 of experience, only the guilty tell incoherent lies.

He has asked for Kate to tell the truth, I think she is way beyond that point!

Oranje, welcome!

Unknown said...

Is Kate slyly saying they left the rear patio door open to deal with evidence she knew would be found?

Madeleine crying for one hour and fifteen minutes on the Tuesday night before she went missing altogether on the Thursday?

Who was it who was actually having access to that apartment and why? Mrs Fenn says she heard the rear patio doors and Madeleine'c crying stopped. Kate's first words apparently are "they have taken her". That clearly implies Kate knows who "they" are.

Gerry suggests that David Payne did a check of his children on the Wednesday in his statement, something David denies, he says he never left the table because they had an intercom to listen to their children.

If people are wondering why it is taking British Police such a long time to get a breakthrough in this case, maybe they should have a look at the evidence and think what might have been going on and just how complex this case is. Like trying to fit pieces of a jigsaw together as one Portuguese Officer commented.

Speaking of Royalty, where the law is differently applied to any other mere mortal, the McScams are once again demanding the government show the British hand by amalgamating British agency files even with their own private investigator rubbish.

Their fear of what is in British agency files and just when they can expect that knock on the door, how they could manipulate the evidence to suit if they only knew what it is, is what drives this sick couple ever onwards.

Keir Simmons comments the government are not keeping them informed. That is him going as near as he dare to pointing out that as they are a guilty couple the government are refusing to co-operate with them. Criminals are now allowed to see police files about them. Note the difference of how the government treat genuinely innocent parents. Mrs Payne for example.

Tonight Kate and Gerry were interviewed by Piers Morgan for CNN. Kate looked every bit the New York socialite with enough makeup slapped on to start her own beauty parlour. But she could not answer a simple question, how did you think it was safe and secure to leave your tiny children without a nanny in that apartment. Gerry, just went back to the garden scenario. Some have commented they would like to slap them, that is understandable.

Dear Prime Minister

As a devoted father and family man, you know the importance of children. Our beloved eldest child, Madeleine, was abducted from Praia da Luz, Portugal, four years ago. Since then, we have devoted all our energies to ensuring her safe return.

Today we are asking you – and the British and Portuguese governments – to help find Madeleine and bring her back to her loving family.

We live in hope that Madeleine will be found alive and returned to us. One call might be all that is needed to lead to Madeleine and her abductor.

To this end, we are seeking a joint INDEPENDENT, TRANSPARENT and COMPREHENSIVE review of ALL information held in relation to Madeleine’s disappearance. Thus far, there has been NO formal review of the material held by the police authorities – which is routine practice in most major unsolved crimes.

A key piece of the ‘jigsaw’ could easily have been overlooked and not joined up with another.

We have tried in vain to get the authorities in the UK and Portugal to play their part.

But, sadly, our requests have seemingly fallen on deaf ears. It is simply not acceptable that they have, to all intents and purposes, given up on Madeleine.

I know you will share our concern that no law enforcement agency in the world is currently searching for Madeleine. Our small team of investigators is working alone. They do not have access to all the information gathered during the course of the investigation and have no statutory powers.

It is fundamental for any major incident that a case review is undertaken to identify all the avenues that could be explored that might lead to new information coming into the inquiry. The information in Madeleine’s case is not even held on one central, searchable database capable of linking data.

I’m told that behind the scenes quiet negotiations have been underway for some time to try to persuade Portugal to cooperate with a review of the Madeleine McCann case.

The last government commissioned an inquiry into whether it was possible. Whether the evidence gathered by detectives in Portugal, Leicestershire Police and the McCann’s own team could be brought together. I’m told that report concluded that Portugal’s government would need to agree to it.

Hence the negotiations that have been underway which might well lead to a breakthrough at some point.

If this is the case, it looks as if the government have not kept Kate and Gerry McCann informed in the way you might expect. They have issued an open letter to the Prime Minister. In it their frustration is clear.

We could only use some of it in tonight’s ITV News at Ten. So here it is in full:

(I have no doubt there would be immense benefits in pulling together different bits of information, to you, Gerry, but you need to remember one thing, you are a criminal, under investigation and cannot change legal procedure just because you are a narcissist who says so)

The benefits of pulling together different bits of evidence can be enormous but until this is done we cannot be sure what, if anything, has been missed. Four years may have passed but Madeleine is still findable. As we have said before we don’t want hollow, meaningless words.

We want action. We want the authorities to help us. Madeleine’s abductor is still out there – other children may be at risk.

It is not good enough to just say it’s a Portuguese investigation.

It is not right that a young vulnerable British citizen has essentially been given up on. This remains an unsolved case of a missing child. Children are our most precious gift.

Please don’t give up on Madeleine.

The McCanns should not get so frustrated by the government repeating to them that finding Madeleine is a matter for the Portuguese, if she was abducted by a stranger, as they insist, that is perfectly true. And quite typical of any clever government they would play games with this sick couple.

And yet, it is not what Gerry wants to hear, he wants to know what he has missed in his manipulating propaganda machine to defend them, the contents of those files that Mrs Justice Hogg told him two years ago, he just cannot be allowed to see. Now lie down and take it Gerry, like a good boy.

No, it does not.

Kate and Gerry have appeared on East Midlands Today, dressed down and sitting by a pleasant waterway and weir.

Brief transcript:

EMT: The McCanns say that as a British Citizen Madeleine's disappearance should be taken more seriously.

(Picture of apartment) They lost their daughter when she disappeared from a Portuguese apartment. Today is her 8th birthday and Madeleine is still missing. Her parents say that nothing is being done to look for her and something has to change. They spoke with Lorraine Kelly at breakfast time.

Kate: I think it is shocking and although we have tried to tell people since July 2008 that no one is looking for Madeleine people are understandably shocked that a little girl is missing and the authorities have, essentially, given up.

EMT: During the Portuguese investigation the McCanns became the prime suspects (picture of Gerry at Portmao) for 9 months until police there shelved the case. Nowr the couple want the British Government to hold a Serious Case Review.

GERRY: A little girl is missing and not everything has been done to try and find her and we want British engagement between the British Prime Minister and the Portuguese Prime Minister to say what can we do.

I think it is shocking that you have got this massive amount of information that has been sitting there and no one is looking at it or reviewing it.

EMT: In a statement today Leicester Police say it is essentially a Portuguese matter.

This afternoon her book will be officially launched in it the former GP tells of the pressure they have been under and their frustrations. They say all money raised will be used to fund the ongoing search by their private investigators.

The language used in this report is very interesting. AT no stage is there any suggestion that Madeleine was abducted. Maybe neutral wording was a condition of them being allowed to appear on the BBC as I know they have received numerous complaints about biased reporting, ignoring the evidence in this case, i.e. there is no evidence that Madeleine was "stolen from her bed".

From slips of the tongue Gerry has previously stated he wants to "get information into the inquiry". That is clearly the sort of information his private detectives are paid to rake up, of sightings and nasty paedophiles who are nothing to do with him, posh lookalikes etc. This is the mass of stuff he commands the PMs of our respective countries must start taking note of.

He knows the authorities will not comment, I am sure they have not given up on Madeleine at all as he suggests, although they may be quite certain she is dead and looking for a body never has the urgency that looking for a living child does.

Contrary to Gerry's wishes the authorities will continue to treat the needs of the victim in all of this as paramount, not what her "parents" demand. If she is dead, that is a demand for justice for her and to put an end to the totally unseemly selling of her by those who were entrusted by law, not to permanently "lose" her.

Even in death, if that is the reality, Madeleine deserves respect.

Unknown said...

The use of the specific term "Serious Case Review" is also very interesting, below is the definition of that term which is hardly one the McCanns would want to be associated with!

Unknown said...

What is a Serious Case Review? – (Working Together to Safeguard Children 2006. pp.169- 170)

When a child dies, and abuse or neglect are known or suspected to be a factor in the death, local organisations will consider immediately whether there are other children at risk of harm who require safeguarding (e.g. siblings, other children in an institution where abuse is alleged). Thereafter, organisations will consider whether there are any lessons to be learned about the ways in which they work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

Consequently, when a child dies in such circumstances, the LSCB will always conduct a serious case review into the involvement of organisations and professionals with the child and family.

Additionally, the LSCB will always consider whether a serious case review should be conducted:

• Where a child sustains a potentially life-threatening injury or serious and permanent impairment of health and development, or
• Has been subjected to particularly serious sexual abuse, or
• Their parent has been murdered and a homicide review is being initiated, or
• The child has been killed by a parent with a mental illness, or
• The case gives rise to concerns about inter-agency working to protect children from
harm.
What is the Purpose of Serious Case Reviews

Unknown said...

The purpose of Serious Case Reviews are to:
establish whether there are lessons to be learned from the case about the way in which local professionals and organisations work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children;
identify clearly what those lessons are, how they will be acted upon, and what is
expected to change as a result; and
as a consequence, to improve inter-agency working and better safeguard and
promote the welfare of children.

Serious Case Reviews are not inquiries into how a child died or who is culpable. That is a matter for Coroners and Criminal Courts respectively to determine, as appropriate. The Coroners and Family and Criminal Courts may request Serious Case Review Reports and Individual Management Reports. The DfES (Ofstead) and the Strategic health Authority will also be provided with relevant reports.

Serious Case Reviews are of little value unless lessons are learnt from them. At least as much effort should be spent on acting on recommendations as on conducting a review.
Learning Lessons Locally

Day to day good practice can help ensure that Serious Case Reviews are conducted successfully and in a way most likely to maximize learning by:

Establishing a culture of audit and review. Make sure that tragedies are not the only reason inter-agency work is reviewed;
Have in place clear, systematic case recording and record keeping
Develop good communication and mutual understanding between different disciplines and different LSCB members;
Communicate with the local community and media to raise awareness of the positive and ‘helping’ work of statutory services with children, so that attention is not focused disproportionately on tragedies;
Make sure staff and their representatives understand what can be expected in the event of a child death/case review.

In Liverpool we work in accordance to ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children 2006’

The approach in the Madeleine review will be the same as in any re-examination of cases in the UK, a police source said. "What we do is painstakingly look at all the evidence, the paperwork, the CCTV, any suspects who came to light and were investigated. Sometimes it takes fresh eyes to see what was always there."

Maybe the McCanns should be a little more circumspect in what they wish for?

Wizard said...

Hi Viv,

I like the new blog look very much. Mind you, it’s taken me a few days to find how to post. LOL

Well, TV breakfast news yesterday had the McCanns’ featured and even Clarence wheeled out for comment. Kate was interviewed but Gerry remained remarkably quiet.

From a marketing point of view, it would be inadvisable to have someone who is hot headed, like GM, being interview and seen loosing their rag on camera again. What next - people will be thinking he killed his daughter in a rage!

Kate as usual is plausible, but of course everything she says she would feel - whether she knows exactly what happened or not. The feelings expressed are those of a grieving parent the only speculation is if she is an innocent grieving parent or guilty one – the feelings would be exactly the same imo. KM is not a psychopath therefore she would show remorse.

The Met have been asked to look at the case with fresh eyes and see if anything transpires. They have chosen not to comment on operational details for the ‘fresh eyes’ look and even the Mc’s do not know exactly what this means. It all adds up to very little in my opinion – fresh eyes will indicate the parents were most likely involved but lack of conclusive evidence prevents prosecution. The McCanns’ remain prime suspects.

Wizard said...

Old Etonian boy Cameron, who tells us cuts are necessary across the board, now tells us he has asked the Met to look into the disappearance of MBM again. Who is paying for all this I wonder is it coming out of Tory boy Cameron’s pocket. No of course, not - he is pandering to the whims of two middle class doctors. What about all the other kids that have gone missing Mr Cameron or do you think the McCanns' child is vote winner.

So ends my rant for the day! lol

Unknown said...

Hiya Wiz and glad to see you negotiated the absolute intricacy of the new red blog. Not my intention, it just happened that way, that is how technology and I relate, lol!

I think no matter which way the McCanns come out of this, unfortunately for them, they lose. What they have always been about, above Madeleine's safety is she was still alive when they lost her, is their own self preservation and above all their good reputation.

Once they accept the moment they chose to go to the media and tell us all about their attitude to childcare they lost their reputation, the more chance they have of just moving on from this.

I still do not know whether this is an abduction brought about by their admitted neglect, or an abduction they took part in, or Madeleine's homicide. But one thing I am certain about, the London Met will not be clearing their name.

You have to wonder what the "sensitivities" are that the Home Office refer to preventing the McCanns from seeing the CEOP report that was commissioned. Is it fear of upsetting the Portuguese for criticising them for failure to lock down the crime scene and seize all relevant evidence immediately? Or is it something deeper than that given this was a report by CEOP, details of child abuse by the McCanns and others? After all, what they describe in itself is child abuse...

Like you I am rather miffed by the timing of tory boy's announcement and toadying letter to the McCanns. This certainly smacks of privileged treatment when a doctor's child goes missing and the public are going to take it even harder given they know how badly these doctors behaved. Of course it is likely he knows the answers and they are not going to help Kate and Gerry at all, but he needs to put a lid on it.

I would be delighted if they actually did get a result, but evidence of any death was clearly lost at the time. Goncalo seems to admit that in his book.

I think Gerry is so far gone that he genuinely believes that what he has "got into the investigation" will simply outweigh the evidence against them of being terminally bad parents and terminal liars. But, as with his action, against Goncalo, an ego that size makes you unstoppable and Kate, well, I think she still needs that psychi help

Hi Viv & Wizard

Glad Blogger have sorted themselves out and you are up and running again.

I really was not sure if the review by SY was a good thing or not, or whether it would indeed achieve anything, or just be another waste of money. I am glad to see Viv that you think it will be a good thing.

I am glad Goncalo has stated that Kate's comment in her book that there have been other cases of child abuse in Portugal are lies. Typically Antonella calls Goncalo sacked and that he launched a vile attack on Kate. I wonder if this has been reported correctly.

Hiya Di

It was rather strange with blogger saying they would have to remove a load of posts, but I am sure we can manage!

It is interesting the Met are suggesting this may take years and cost millions, as we know many very serious murder and sexual abuse cases do, particularly where the suspects are intelligent and devious. For a case as serious as this, and the sheer scale of the impact upon the public, I think all stops need to be pulled right out. AT the very least, from the highest level it needs to be made clear in an official way, that the McCann style of parenting simply cannot be emulated by Karen Matthews or some wicked German man or anyone else.

Children are not and never should be some pawn in a game that is really only about adult money and power.

Thanks for the link, it is difficult to take too much notice of The Sun, but I do await further developments with hope and interest that eventually we all see what we want to happen in this case. Some resolutio as to what the McCanns actually did with Madeleine. Questions answered like why did they say they left the patio door ajar every night, did they really do that, why did they tell all their relatives and hence the media the windows and shutters got jemmied. Why have they put out such an assorted and confusing array of pictures of Madeleine? Why have they never adverted to the very substantial reward monies that were pledged? Most important I think for me, how come they had those two sets of two pictures of Madeleine immediately available to hand to the police. Perhaps also an explanation, better than the one Kate offers as to why the Portuguese Police did not get a call that night until 10.40 pm, on their account, a full forty minutes after THEY KNEW Maddie had been abducted. As the McCanns are so fond of telling us all, time is of the essence, by the time they reported matters the abductor could have been virtually in Spain, that is if there was one that they were not fully aware of.

I hope that the slanging match between Goncalo and the McCanns can be brought to a close. I do not think either side have been exactly right, this has to be about little children and justice, not warring adults.

Unknown said...

I recall it is the late Mrs Fenn's evidence that she offered to call the police for the distraught McCanns but she was told not to bother, it has already been done.

Now hang on a minute, I do try to put myself in the shoes of the McCanns, to look at things from every angle.

You know your child has been abducted, you have no phone or number to the police, but a local has the phone and the number and is offering to call. You think they have already been called but they have not arrived. In the heat of the moment what would I have said to Mrs Fenn? There is only one obvious answer, and I doubt Kate will offer any satisfactory explanation in her book as to why they did not want her help.

Unknown said...

I am sure we are all very sorry that Mrs Fenn's last few years must have been filled with such great sadness.

I hope she can now rest in peace and of course the police do have comprehensive evidence from her and so she will continue to help little Maddie. I am sure that is what she really wanted to do.

Good grief, I may have thought it but I never knew the ACC of LP actually said this, talk about putting another nail in your coffin Kate - this book by her is an unmitigated disaster for the Doctors McCann. It is nice to have Blacksmith posting again!

A footnote, provided by Kate McCann
On July 7 2008 Mrs Justice Hogg gave judgement in the Family Division of the High Court regarding the attempt by Kate & Gerry McCann to gain access to all the Leicester Police documents regarding the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

The judgement was by agreement between the parties and was made in open court.

M/S Kate McCann in her book Madeleine has now provided an except from the official submission of Leicester Police to the court regarding the matter and outlining the reasons why they could not agree to provide the documents. Signed by the assistant chief constable of Leicestershire it runs:

“While one or both of them may be innocent, there is no clear evidence that eliminates them from involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.”

It takes me back to those words from Susan Healy recently Kate just had to put down her own account (not verbatim)

Presumably said with knowledge of the investigation by London Met and knowing that perhaps it is Kate setting Gerry up, the truth can be stranger than fiction..

It is noticeable that he wants to remain "no comment", typically what guilty criminals feel the need to do, not that I am suggesting Kate is exactly "innocent".

When you think about it, this could be a pretty canny move on behalf of the government/London Met etc.

I was a bit annoyed at the timing of Cameron's announcement on the same date the book was due out, but in actual fact in one fell swoop he has wrecked Kate's book...we are now investigating - one of the most powerful and celebrated law enforcement agencies in the world and we are funding it to the tune of millions. So shut up Kate and wait for London Met to come and grab some collars in Leicester, or maybe they will just give Leicester Police the privilege...

Talk about putting the McCanns on the backfoot and stopping them from cashing in for their ahem "Fighting Fund". Mr Cameron can do nothing directly against them whilst they are under investigation, he cannot say the fund is a fraud, but he can do what he has done and let them know what the score really is. Your time is up, it may take years but you are not going to cashin anymore... we have had chats with Portugal, your little funding venture there got stopped, we have had chats with the London Met...It is probably unwise to mess with Theresa May and David Cameron, I cannot imagine they actually like so called professional people who mercilessly dump their child and then cashin on their own heinous crime.

How quickly the McCann spin machine springs into action with this absurd rubbish. I wish they would spin why the Met Police have put a HOMICIDE specialist in charge of the investigation for their abductor. That would be an interesting read.

I was reading the rogatory of David Payne again earlier. Eerily the interviewing officer pressed him again and again about the arrangements HE made for that holiday. He ummed and her ahhd and he changed track mid sentence. But still the officer wanted to know WELL WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE OCEAN CLUB. That, to me, exactly explained the police thinking behind the question, this was PLANNED and David Payne knew about the "Mark Warner concept we were buying into". I continue to fear the very worst for poor little Maddie both in life and her almost certain death. I really hope that David Payne and Gerry McCann in particular are now seriously quaking in their boots.

News of the World: Cops new e-fit of Maddie abducter

Madeleine McCann
EXCLUSIVE by Matthew Drake
May 15, 2011

THE face of Madeleine McCann's abductor could finally be unmasked by hi-tech police profiling computers, we can reveal.

A Metropolitan Police case review squad will be given access to key descriptions of potential suspects.

And they will use advanced software to produce a definitive e-fit.

It is hoped it will produce an image of a man seen lurking near the McCanns' holiday flat in Portugal around the time Madeleine was snatched.

Several eyewitness accounts of the "suspicious" male will be run through the Electronic Facial Identification Technique. The team will be led by Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood - who snared a Portuguese killer who had been on the run for 15 years.

DCI Redwood will utilise profiling software - available to just five forces worldwide - to mine a wealth of data buried in the original McCann files.

A source close to Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, said: "There is a long list of people who were interviewed at the time.

"Several of these spotted a man acting suspiciously around their apartment. It's a good chance this was the same man as many of the descriptions are extremely similar. They have never been co-ordinated because several were never put in the public domain by the Portuguese police. Kate found them only by trawling through the files. She was devastated.

"Now with the review we can pull all these together for the first time."

DCI Redwood will oversee a team of murder squad detectives at London's Belgravia Police Station. Around ten officers will work on the review - with others on stand-by in case of a major breakthrough. A Scotland Yard source said: "Andy is an extremely experienced homicide detective."

Kate, 43, and Gerry, 42, are confident that a single image will galvanise the global search for Madeleine, who vanished in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, when just three.

Last night a private detective hired by the couple was set to give his huge dossier of evidence to Scotland Yard.

Our source said the work of ex-cop Dave Edgar "will be of enormous help to the Met for the review".

The source added: "The Met will have the files from the Portuguese and Leicestershire police but Dave's work has been the only real active investigation for the last two years."

The Ocean Club is a sprawling complex open to the village of Praia da Luz. In short it is open to anyone who happens by and is NOT IN THE LEAST a safe place to leave unguarded tiny tots -with the door open and KNOWING FULL WELL they had previously cried out for their parents.

Tick tock Team McScam and JUSTICE FOR LITTLE MADDIE AND ALL ABUSED CHILDREN. That is what this investigation represents a powerful message to all parents, you act like these two and we WILL get you, no matter how important you may think you are!

A good interviewing officer will catch a suspect unawares be pleasant and non committal, asking questions that may seem almost innocuous. But when you read the rogatory of David Payne this officer is very carefully setting the scene and getting David Payne to admit so much that will ultimately, I believe, be used in evidence against him.

He has been on Mark Warners before, he knew about this child checking route that some resorts used to operate. But he knew full well it did not operate in Praia da Luz. But he says it was the concept they were buying into. He planned the holiday for them all... Gerry paid for additional flights for them to save them travelling down to London to take the scheduled flights.

If you was a prosecution barrister you could have a field day with David Payne if you think about it, given what that police officer has extracted from him.

If you are booking a holiday for everyone, would you choose to go somewhere where the flights go from London but you live in the Midlands, right by East Midlands Airport and relatively near to Birmingham? Would you then allow your mate to pay for your whole family's flight costs from a local airport on top of paying for the inclusive ones in the cost of the holiday? Because that is what David Payne tells the police he did. Why would Gerry be feeling so generous, what could have been so important for these two when arranging this expensive holiday with two lots of flights for the two families having to be paid for by Gerry and additional transfer costs? What was it they had planned that was so important? Getting away with it? Stopping little Maddie from going to school? This "articulate" child as Gerry describes her? The nearest Maddie got to going to school was her name on a coat peg, which is just so sad. Abusive parents do not like their children going to school, they will come up with all reasons to keep them away, FACT. It is absence from school in itself that often leads teachers and social workers to discover more serious abuse than that.

Is Kate wanting to get her evidence in now before it gets further distorted by the master manipulator she is married to? I only have theories but it is a strong one for me that she actually was shocked when she found "they had taken her".

The review will be led Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command (HSCC).

He has previously conducted an investigation which snared murderer Miguel da Silva after a cold case review.

The killer, who went on the run for 15 years after strangling mother-of-two Susan Martin, 44, in 1994, was jailed for life at the Old Bailey last November and told he must serve at least 16 years behind bars.

Mr Redwood will report to Detective Chief Superintendent Hamish Campbell, HSCC operational command unit commander, and the senior officer in overall charge of the HSCC, Commander Simon Foy.

Specialist Crime

From London Met webpage this maybe the raison de etre for their involvement but if it is, does not sit squarely with the oft repeated claims of her parents, "there is absolutely no evidence she has come to any harm" quite extraordinary really given Kate's perverted talk in her book of what she imagines Maddie may be enduring. I imagine the Financial Investigation Unit may also have a part to play here!!

"High-risk missing persons where there is a substantive reason to suspect life has been taken or is under threat"

Homicide and Serious Crime Command

Detective Chief Superintendent. Hamish Campbell - Operational Command Unit (OCU) Commander

Key Responsibilities: The leadership, management, oversight and responsibility for over one thousand members of personnel within the command who undertake murder investigations and other serious crime investigations within the capital.

Key Units: The key units supporting this task include the 24 Murder Investigation Teams (MIT's), the Homicide Task Force, HOLMES support (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System), the Central Criminal Court Trials Unit, Coroner's Officer, Family Liaison Advisory Team, Disaster Victim Identification as well as significant police staff support across all areas.

Murder Investigation Teams investigate:

All murder, manslaughter and infanticide offences;
Deaths within the workplace or mass disaster where culpability for the loss of life is likely to be an issue in criminal court
Attempted murder where the evidence of intent is unambiguous or where a risk assessment identifies substantive risk to life
High-risk missing persons where there is a substantive reason to suspect life has been taken or is under threat
Linked series of two or more stranger rapes which are beyond the capability of SCD2 Sapphire Command or other 'critical incidents'
Additionally, the teams provide advice for the MPS and other police forces on 'High Risk' situations.

Financial Investigation Unit (FIU)

The Financial Investigation Unit assist with identifying offenders in homicide enquiries, gathering evidence of their involvement and obtaining evidence of financial motive where apparent. The FIU deal with any Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) matters in Homicide investigations such as Cash Seizure, Forfeiture, Restraint and Asset Recovery through Confiscation. The FIU also assist with advice and help with the investigation of acquisitive crimes, namely Money Laundering, Theft and Fraud that have been identified during Homicide enquiries. Furthermore they seek to disrupt associated Organised Criminal Networks through available POCA legislation.

Homicide Task Force (HTF)

The Homicide Task Force (HTF) is a proactive resource of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command. The HTF supports the command with technical and tactical advice and implementation of operational tactics to assist murder investigation teams. A key role of the HTF is tracing and apprehending murder suspects, this involves the HTF supporting taskings from the murder investigation teams and assuming responsibility for locating and arresting suspects wanted for murders. The HTF also specialises in the support of armed operations on behalf of the command and is continually developing skills and tactics for use in all of the above functions.

The Specialist Casework Investigations Team (SCIT)

The Special Casework Investigations Team (SCIT) is based at NSY and is an additional resource for the OCU Commander. A significant proportion of the work undertaken by this team of experienced detectives is to progress new lines of enquiry, identified through the Specialist Crime Review Group's review of unsolved cases. The team also identifies, researches, trials and implements new investigative opportunities and techniques. They are the first line of response for the many questions and enquiries coming into the command, from the public and our police colleagues, which require research, development or investigation.

Police Staff

SCD1 also have a large number of professional support staff working to provide the organisational capability required to support the Homicide and Serious Crime Command. They include: HOLMES (Home Office Large Major Enquiry System) Support, which is a national system used to administer enquiries, Business Support (including HR, Resources, Finance and Business Planning), research and analysis, and investigative support functions.

Watch this from 26 particularly 26.33 Gerry shoots some grim looks at Kate, mouths at her and shoves her hand.

She is talking about Gerry not expressing grief and getting over it so quickly (as opposed to her) and he is giving her some very sinister warnings as to what she is saying. This man fills me with revulsion, he is very sinister.

Could this be the nub of matters, he abused Madeleine and he got rid of her, but Kate just has to keep her mouth shut, I still think it is. I also think he looks subdued much of the time and not showing the usual cocky arrogance and wanting to dominate the discussion. The decision had just been announced about London Met, Kate is very talkative and not afraid. It is usually the other way around.

Gerry would know also that Kirsty Wark (sp) is a formidably clever lady.

Hi Viv

The snippet from Blacksmith is extremely interesting, it would appear LP are determined the McCann's will not get their hands on their files, and good for them. Like you I am glad Blacksmith is posting again.

I really am at a loss at the moment to understand quite what is going on. We have Cameron asking SY to review the case at a cost of 3.5m. After a public outcry we have the McCann's saying money raised from the book will go towards the review.

Today the McCann's facebook page is asking people who have not signed the petition for a review, to please sign. What is the purpose of this, is it a case of the review by SY is not the type of review they want?

Unknown said...

Hiya Di

I believe that what is going on is that Portugal and LP investigated the McCanns but failed to get a result even though it is known the McCanns are, in some way, responsible for the demise of Madeleine. And now, the London Met are conducting a full "Cold Case Review" with a view to prosecuting them or at least one of them!

I also believe that Gerry McCann is so disordered he literally believes he can move mountains. When he talks about an "independent" review it would seem he means independent of the police (he probably thinks Clarence Mitchell should conduct it) because the police are nasty and think he is guilty. I have not forgotten how he almost spits out the name of Ricardo Paiva, IMO, a brilliant Portuguese Officer who understands him completely, hence Gerry hates him.

And by "transparent" Gerry means I need to see all the evidence against me so that I can plot how to con and manipulate my way out of that.

It is great news the McCanns have been backed into a corner to hand over the proceeds of the book, but I wonder if that is the way Kate planned it. She has no life leading this lie and if it is, in the main to protect her husband, I think she has reached the stage where subconsciously at least, she is asking to be brought to justice - confident in the knowledge that she is not actually the one who abused and disposed of Madeleine.

The book is so full of contradictions and things that make it obvious they were involved, I think Kate has had enough and is ready to face it. The book in a way has set her free and empowered her.

AS for Gerry, if I were David Cameron and Gerry said to me, "you have lost a child so you know how it feels", I would be beyond upset. True, he has to act professionally but I also wonder if the timing of the announcement of the review was Mr Cameron saying, just how dare you, you will be so sorry.

It is all just my take on it of course!

In short, Theresa May and David Cameron, in spite of having a report from CEOP pointing out their certain guilt in the disappearance of Madeleine were maybe loathe to commit the millions of pounds required for Scotland Yard to do a cold case review. Even then there is no guarantee there will be sufficient evidence to prosecute (although I am very confident they will find it!!).

But perhaps when Gerry wrote that letter to Cameron that was the catalyst that made him think, enough is enough Gerry McCann.

Unknown said...

I think my own view seems to be backed up by Susan Healy saying she welcomes the Scotland Yard investigation. I think she knows this is best for Kate. We do not hear anything at all from Gerry's relatives, they must be quite horrified, I believe.

Susan Healy has no need to publically speak out, the fact she chooses to do so, says a lot. Kate needed to get this all sorted...

Kate McCann’s Liverpool-based mum, Susan Healy, welcomes Scotland Yard help in hunt for Madeleine

Madeleine McCann
KATE McCANN’S Liverpool-based mum has welcomed the news that Scotland Yard is to bring its expertise to the hunt for missing Madeleine.

Susan Healy, from Allerton, told the ECHO: “It’s good news, although we don’t really know what will be involved in it. The police here really need the co-operation of the police in Portugal.

“We are all in Europe so it’s strange this co-operation is not an automatic thing, with police forces working together – not just in the case of Madeleine, but in the case of any missing child in Europe. The diplomacy, perhaps, should be easier. We’re all in it together.

“But it’s good news and I’m sure Kate and Gerry will feel some of the weight has been taken off their shoulders.”

Kate and Gerry McCann made an impassioned appeal for the Prime Minister to help them revive the search for their daughter, who vanished in Portugal in 2007 shortly before her fourth birthday.

The news that David Cameron had intervened was revealed on Thursday – Madeleine’s eighth birthday and the day Kate and Gerry held a press conference to publicise her book, “Madeleine”.

Welcoming the fact that the book has galvanised the hunt for Madeleine, Kate’s mum explained: “If Kate and Gerry were going to have to keep up the search on their own they needed the money for the fund. But Kate probably would have written this book for her children anyway – though not for publication.

“It’s a very intimate book and I know what my daughter is like – she is a very private person.”

Downing Street said David Cameron had called in the Metropolitan Police to review Madeleine’s disappearance because of the “quite exceptional” nature of the case.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman also confirmed that the operation, which will involve Scotland Yard officers going to Portugal, will be funded entirely from Home Office emergency funds rather than from stretched police resources.

And he rejected suggestions the PM was “dancing to a tabloid agenda” or engaged in “political interference in police matters”.

He said: “This is a quite exceptional case. The police are going to review the case and the way they approach that is clearly an operational matter for the police.”

Meanwhile, Home Secretary Theresa May said the Met “have the skills, techniques and know-how which we hope can bring a new perspective to the case”.

And her spokesman confirmed that the Portuguese authorities will retain “lead responsibility.”

Hiya again Di

I cannot seem to find a link confirming the McCanns have agreed to pay the proceeds of the book towards the review costs.

Do you have a link so that I can put it on here and have a read?

Cheers

What's more comical is the fact these procedures probably will not make much if any of a difference in an eight year old. This child is be unable to form a meaningful relationship with another man in the future due to her vapid, narcissistic, self-obsessed, and superficial personality. The mother is nuts and I hope she is reported to social services. From what I read, there is no statement mentioning the mother is even trained, so that in itself is physically dangerous to the child, not to mention the psychological impacts! The mother is a dope and if she is so easily influenced (like she claims) by stupid actions of other mothers, then she probably shouldn't be raising a child in the first place because she is without a logical brain of her own! UTTERLY AMAZING!

Although I have mentioned it many times before UK have jurisdiction to act against the McCanns - see the relevant part of the Code for Crown Prosecutors. On the other hand, if Maddie had been abducted by a stranger UK do not have jurisdiction. That surely must be a complete answer as to what London Met are now up to, on the very proper orders of the government. It really is a terribly serious case that needs prosecuting for the sake of other children, not just Madeleine and the twins.

Resolving jurisdictional conflicts
Where the offence occurred on a single territory

Generally, an offence will only be triable in the jurisdiction in which the offence takes place, unless there is a specific provision to ground jurisdiction, for instance where specific statutes enable the UK to exercise extra-territorial jurisdiction:

sexual offences against children (s. 72 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003)
murder and manslaughter (ss. 9 and 10 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861)
fraud and dishonesty (Criminal Justice Act 1993 Part 1)
terrorism (ss. 59, 62-63 of the Terrorism Act 2000)
bribery (s. 109 of the Anti-terrorism Crime and Security Act 2001)
For a list of particular offences with an extra-territorial reach see Archbold 2-36a-2-83.
