JUSTINE MCGUINNESS ORDERED BY LAWYERS TO BE SILENT..

2008-12-16
McCann Case: Analyses of the Phone Calls Reveal an Unexplored Clue

by Duarte Levy

Justine McGuiness and the Ribeira do Vascão

Justine McGuiness, the McCann’s spokeswoman who accompanied them in their get away for England soon after they had been constituted as arguidos, left in the apartment that served as headquarters to the couple several documents, including photographies, establishing a possible link between Madeleine's disappearance and the riverside of the Ribeira do Vascão, near the border with Spain. Today, after 19 months have passed since the day in which Madeleine disappeared, the clue left by Justine McGuiness gives again something to talk about.

It is on the day of Kate and Gerry’s escape for England, to the 9th of September of 2007, four months since the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, that the Judiciary Police (PJ) puts their hands in series of documents left in the Vila Vista Mar, up to that time occupied by the couple, which includes photos and even a sketch, indicating the detailed location of a place on the border between the Alentejo and the Algarve, to 20 km of Almodôvar, crossed by the Ribeira do Vascão. The inspectors of the PJ entered at the house soon after the departure of the McCanns for the airport, thus taking advantage of the fact that the journalists had accompanied the couple.

The documents left behind by the McCann’s spokeswoman, Justine McGuiness, were found underneath a sofa and they had, besides the identification of a quite precise geographical zone, countless inscriptions that the PJ never managed to interpret. According to sources close to the inquest, nothing was done in this sense and the men of the PJ, who would have looked at the documents as the work of an esoteric group, did not even bother to visit the place indicated considering the clue as being worthless for the case.

I am not clear how they know they were left behind by Justine unless the docs and photos somehow identify her and I am struggling to believe she would have possession of a detailed map - unless she found it in Gerry's work area and deliberately hid it knowing the Police would find it, as suggested by others bloggers today on the last post, but did Kate or more likely all the friends and rels she had working for her never clean under the sofa? What we do know is Gerry was very angry with Justine claiming she had seriously overcharged on her expenses claims, but her bill, if I recall was around 50K for three months work and by the sound of things the McCanns were very hard task masters and she was exhausted. Apart from that £50K was just a month's money for Metodo 3 and then PLUS expenses. Of course Gerry did not have a problem with them generously paying witnesses for sightings (and bizarrely they decided from the outset there would be sightings, ahem how on earth could they know that..one year anniversay event!) or dodgy lawyers to tell sordid lies about what apparently happened to Maddie,>now revealed to be on of those dreams and visions the Pro McCann camp are so very fond of.

The spokeswoman of the McCann, who accompanied them during the days in which the couple was constituted arguidos before the Portuguese justice, would be fired upon arrival to England, this despite the fact that that she might reveal herself as one of the most worrying witnesses for the couple and for the British authorities themselves. What is certain is that Justine McGuiness was never questioned by the Judicial Police and therefore the exact meaning of the documents and photos was never explained.

I think this is a typo, she would not be a worrying witness FOR the couple IMO! I do not understand how she could worry the British authorities, she never worked for them! Just because the PJ have not interviewed her, this does not mean that British Police have not, but they never reveal details of an ongoing investigation. I strongly suspect they will have interviewed her because she was with the McCanns at the most crucial times.

In declarations recorded recently in London, sources close to the former candidate of the Liberal party, an expert in public relations, confirmed that Justine McGuiness has even been the target of various pressures, specifically in the legal field, indicating that she should maintain silence over everything that she saw or heard during the time she worked with Kate and Gerry McCann.

I have no doubt that lots of people have been pressured in the most insidious ways by the many people that work for Kate and Gerry McCann and Justine I am sure would be no exception to that. By specifically in the legal field I take that to mean legal action for breach of contract was threatened. When people agree contractual terms they can agree anything they like and when Gerry employed her I have no doubt it would have been a term of the contract that she was not allowed to speak out.
But this would not apply to the Police, if they ask her questions she must answer or face charges herself! As we know the Royals always employ people on these contractual terms, and Kate /Gerry clearly had very high aspirations, somewhat lowered now, for sure. Kate and Gerry have repeatedly used the civil law /threats of this against people to try and prevent themselves from finishing up in a criminal court, whilst not even being prepared to enter a civil court and explain themselves, well that could produce criminal evidence against them!

What is certain is that the former spokesman of the couple was already obviously at odds with the couple, particularly with Kate McCann, on the day in which she left Portugal with them and it was no surprise to anyone the "divorce" upon arrival in England. Justine always wove harsh criticisms, some of them in the presence of several journalists at Madeleine's mother and the bad relations between the two women surpassed the financial issues, where Justine constantly demanded the payment of her work and the numerous hours spent beside the couple as well as for the meetings and dinners with journalists and British authorities envoys.

Today, everything might be forgotten if it wasn’t for the results of an investigation to the telephone calls of the couple McCann and of all the persons who were in contact with them, carried out by journalists in collaboration with former operational elements from the Secret Intelligence Service.

Well it does sound as though these investigative journalists have some real intelligence officers uncovering facts and evidence for them unlike Kate and Gerry who utilised Control Risks Group (it is all in the name, nothing to do with investigation of a missing child), Metodo 3, fraud investigators who need to be well up on this particular subject, and one man band Mr Halligen charging a mere £80,000 per month to infiltrate a Belgian Paedophile network, not that this has anything at all to do with the disappearance of Maddie. An unknown source sent information to the Metropolitan Police they had taken her, sue me if you like Mr Marco but you are a real good candidate for that unknown source. Mr Halligen might have thought that was a bit dodgy!
There again there are any number of candidates - take Gerry's friends in Amsterdam, that they just had to leave their kids to go and see. Of course the Fund needs to be big, so many people to pay!
Swansea again

While investigating the calls received and done by the McCann’s mobile phones during their stay in Portugal, the investigators found a report from inspector Paulo Dias of the PJ where it is confirmed that Kate received on the 2nd of May of 2007, at around 11h21, a call from Swansea (UK) which, later, she would justify to the PJ as being a mistake. A sufficiently important "mistake" so that Madeleine's mother guarded the register of this call in her mobile, in spite of having deleted all the details of other communications.

More interesting, the investigators - some Britons - used to dealing with sensitive cases, also found the register of a phone call made on the same day, after lunch, between a mobile phone in Praia da Luz and the same number of Swansea that had contacted Kate McCann. The mobile from which the call is made does not belong to any of the McCanns nor to the group of friends who were accompanying them and up to today the Judiciary Police, despite several requests to the English authorities, has never been able to identify the owner of that mobile nor has obtained from the English support or willingness so that they questioned whomever it was regarding these calls.

Now, while cross-referencing the results obtained next to the mobile telecommunication operators in Portugal and in Spain with the reports of the Judiciary Police in particular the excellent work of the inspector Paulo Dias, investigators and journalists found a new element worthy of interest: the mobile phone used in Praia da Luz to call the number from Swansea who had contacted Kate on May 2, was used to make and receive calls in the area indicated in the documents and in the photographs that the McCann’s spokeswoman left under the sofa on the day of the run off for England.

I have a feeling the British Police will know all about this!

According to the records now known, the mobile phone was used near the Ribeira do Vascão on several occasions, namely between the days 12 and May 15th, 2007 but equally in June and July of the same year. Those phone calls were always made to England or to Praia da Luz, except for one, which was made to the British embassy in Lisbon.

We heard of mobile phone tracking to a certain area and Gerry McCann being a long way from where he claimed he was on a particular date in June. Again the clear evidence coming out is that British Police were there too investigating these two and what we have heard about and written on this blog is the truth!

Finally - again, many thanks to our Portuguese friends, journalists, investigators including Joana and Duarte who are uncovering the REAL FACTS which in turn has finally shut the gruesome twosome up, just what can they say!

Important to read the full report by Paulo Reis & Associates: More on the deleted call records

At 11.21 Kate received a call from what appears to be a landline in Swansea ( xxxxx0023). The report by Inspector Dias researched this call in detail (Page 21 in his report of 9th November 2007) and discovered that it had not activated any of the Luz antennae. But digging deeper, he found that another UK mobile (xxxxx 1583) had triggered the Luz antenna when connecting to the same Swansea number at 14.01. He dug even deeper, tracked all of the calls made from Luz by xxxx1583 and established it had no connection whatsoever with any of the “Tapas 9”. The Swansea call to Kate McCann was simply a “wrong number”, misrouted and thus not logged by the Luz antennae.

Rosie, I have been out & just saw your post 14.52. It would take me too long to explain how I reached the point I am at and I fear this shortform is going to be taken out of context & misunderstood.
1. I know as virtually 1st hand fact which I cannot prove to you about coverups therefore I accept they are possible. Everything is struck from the records and is untraceable.

2. Gerrys blogs irrates me beyond measure. Too much me me me, too much what they are doing and how they are feeling and no mention of what Madeleine may have gone through etc. Often no mention at all. Solved that problem, no longer read it.

3. Ok so they checked the kids every 30 minutes (supposedly). What planet are they from? Kids of that age should not be left at all they could come to all sorts of harm within 30 mins yet even now they do not seem to have grasped that nettle.

4. Kate said she thought Madeleine would be giving whoever took her, her twopenny worth, what a weird thing to say, has she any clue what Madeleine would be enduring with a paedophile. Again what planet are they from.

5. Ok so they make several errors of judgement, leaving the kids, giving out too soon info on Madeleines eye defect, going against expert advice that it could put her in danger etc etc.& we accept anybody in the heat of the moment can make mistakes. Kate says the twins are finding it hard without Madeleine so one would have thought making them feel secure & in a settled routine would now be a priorty when they returned home. But what did they do, go all over the place doing this and that leaving the twins with family. I know they left them well cared for but IMO there was no need for them both to go, Kate should have stayed with the twins. Infact under the circumstances I would have thought she would not want to let them out of her sight.

Viv -

Thanks for the new thread!

I always thought it strange that Justine was more or less out of the picture not long after she went to PdeL to assist the McCanns. I personally think she got the thin end of the wedge when she was shown the door because, different to the McCanns, she was never able to defend herself about the allegations of overcharging because she was told to keep quiet about the whole affair. I wouldn't mind betting that it wasn't about money at all, but the fact that Kate didn't like her because perhaps she wasn't a sycophant! Kate complained that she didn't show enough emotion for Madeleine and didn't mention her name - well if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what is!

And just why would Kate keep a call from Swansea on her mobile when she had erased everything else?

And that there was another mobile traced with a call from Swansea too, albeit a different number! It could have belonged to any number of people who were surrounding the McCanns then, but just why was that kept secret too?

This case has more holes in it than than moth ridden socks!!

The post from Gina is refreshing knowing where it was aired, and shows the same opinions she used to have on the DX, and on here. Everything she says I totally agree with, except the bit about the McCanns making an 'error of judgement'! I don't buy that - I think they and their tapas friends deliberately left their children unattended so as to go out and enjoy themselves and the McCanns weren't the only guilty pair. They are all professionals after all and must have known exactly what dangers their children could be in. Whatever happened that night, it cost Madeleine her life!

As far as their insistence that Madeleine was abducted from the actual bedroom is concerned, in the time allowed that has been shown to be an impossibility, and if by some remote chance someone had taken her and she was still alive, some low life would have come up for the reward money by now. Some b......s would sell their soul to the devil for what Brian Kennedy was able to cough up!

I can't wait for Christmas to see their new 'leaving no stone unturned' publicity, but, as usual, the McCanns have declined to appear or say anything to Madeleine themselves to let her know they and the twins are waiting for her and how much they love her, but did they ever?

Hi Viv and Nancy!

Thank you for putting that up, Viv. The plot thickens....! I have to say that when I read that yesterday I was gobsmacked and reading it again this morning, I am still gobsmacked! If what you say is true and the British poice know about this, I am hopeful that there will be justice for Madeleine in time.

Nancy, it is very true what you say about 'error of judgement'. It is not an error of judgement when you consistently make the same "mistake" over and over again. It was deliberate and heartless at best and an evil thing to do at worst.

Gina, if you still read here - well done! It was brave of you to voice those opinions there :-)

Viv, is your house ready for Christmas yet? I hope so.

Hello

Intresting article and I believe the information was left there for the police to find either because Justine does not want to burn in hell for helping cover up a childs death or to throw the police off the scent as there is nothing in the area for them to find...

I thought the 50k was discusting but not because that is what she charged but because the McCanns thought they needed to pay an experienced spokes person this amount.

When a child is really missing the distraught parents and genuine emotion is enough to get every one out searching they did not need someone trying to make them look innocent...

I think their next apeal is a huge mistake because people dont belive them to many smiling pictures and no mention of her.. But the most damming thing of all is neither of them have ever said they were wrong to Neglect their children even though if she had been taken it would be down to them for giving a pervert the oportunity to take her..

Roll on the sports person telling us they need more money because people are asking where it has all gone to..

dylan said...

Hello Hope!

I was beginning to think everyone had gone Xmas mad and would be away for the next few days shopping! Fortunately (and I have my mum to thank for this) I have everything prepared now!

The McCanns have done nothing with their money that has been donated by generous, but naiive, public, other than cover their own @rses and pay off the mortgage. Do they really need a 4 bed house now? I think not! That lovely home of theirs could have been sold long ago (and would have by genuine parents) and downgraded to a three bed, or even a two bed, in order to free up more cash in the search for their beloved daughter.
Only they didn't search, did they? Not only did they not physically search themselves but they used innocently donated money to the fund and from libel awards to further their own sycophantic 'we are lovely parents with integrity - how dare you accuse us of neglect and involvement in our own daughter's disappearance, please help clear our names', disgusting scheme.

I personally will never give a penny to them until they show that they are willing to give up some of their (not very hard earned cash) to the pursuit of finding the daughter they say they love. Even then, I'd be hard pushed to find evidence that says they are innocent!

Scientists don't believe or disbelieve in God. We simply say that we have no proof either way but we are still "allowed" to rely on gut feelings etc. Personally, I believe that there is a "higher being" even though I am reluctant to put a name to it as a God of 'X' religion. However, the evidence we have from a scientific point of view, shows that Maddie died in that appartment. I am not saying I know by whose hand or hands but there is zero evidence to indicate that it was an abduction. It is impossible that an abductor could have taken her and left not a single skin cell behind in the process and therefore, she was not abducted. It is entirely possible and positively indicative that the poor mite died in the appartment that night and all of the forensics gathered point to that.

The day the McCanns get my monetary support for their version of events is when they can PROVE, without doubt that she was abducted and didn't die there, although I'd put the chances of that happening at less than a million to one. I think my money is quite safe and I'll invest it in my own children, thank you very much McCs.

Are you all set for the 25th Hope? xx

Hi Hope & Dyl

As far as I am concerned regarding the fund. If this fund was set up to help find my missing child, I would not expect family and friends to be milking it for all it is worth and I certainly would not be draining it myself for whatever reason. I would expect family to want to give up their time for free. The last thing I would want is for someone to give up their job to work for the fund and obviously has to be taking a salary to survive. This fund is not what it seems. I say no more!

I thought you might like to see what Stella, who used to post here, has to say about Gerry's arguido statement which is now on the DVD section on 3A's.

Many thanks to Carmerina & Nicked for preparing this statement

I cannot believe what I have just read. I am shocked.

"When questioned, he said that on the day they arrived, April 28, they removed two cribs that were in their room, and placed them in Madeleine’s room. He is unable to confirm, but it could be possible, that there were 3 cribs, and they asked them to remove one".

How on earth does a professional NOT remember if there were 3 cribs in the first place or remembers asking for one of them to be removed?

"When questioned, he says that he works at the Emergency Room of the hospital where he works every 15 days"

So he does have experience of working under pressure and in an emergency room. He must therefore have the abililty to think fast and make very quick decisions.

"When asked at what time he went to check on the children the night Madeleine disappeared, he recalls that this was around 21:04 according to his watch".

I thought Mitchell said no one was wearing a watch?

"Moreover, he says that with respect to Madeleine she was in the same position where he had left her at the beginning of the night. Madeleine was lying down on her left side, completely uncovered, i.e. lying on top of the covers with the soft toy and blanket".

So which was it Gerry, very cold for that time of the year, or to hot to put your daughter under her covers. Why were we then led to believe looking at the photographs that her sheets were folded down?

"Matt replied that all was quiet. G. is not absolutely sure, but he is under the impression that he asked Matt if he entered their apartment, to which Matt replied yes".

WTF, how can you not be sure if you asked someone to enter your apartment? Matt replied yes, so that makes him the last person in theory to see a missing child and he should have been made an arguido.

"He was wearing tennis shoes (trainers), blue jeans and a light brown polar top".

I'm sorry, but I just do not believe this pile of poop. He has been playing tennis for a few hours in his trainers and he puts them back on to go out for the night. Rubbish.

"He particularly remembers having looked under all the beds"

I've got a sneaky feeling that those beds have a divan base which means you cannot look underneath them. I will have to check the photographs again, if true, then we know he is lying.

"He does not remember specifically who replied to this lady, but he remembers that somebody spoke to her, assuming it was himself who did so".

How can a professional be so vague. This is something a 5 year old would remember doing.

Glad to see Stella is still on the case.

"When confronted with the fact that Madeleine’s DNA was collected from behind the sofa and in the boot of the vehicle and analyzed by a British laboratory, situations also described before, he says that he cannot explain".

So it's a fact, Madeleine's DNA WAS found behind the sofa.

"When asked if on any occasion Madeleine was injured, he says that he has no comments".

What a truly caring parent.

"The lawyer for the defence says he wishes the arguido to be asked again if Madeleine bled. To which he said it was common for Madeleine to have nosebleeds. He says that he doesn’t know if in fact his daughter bled while on holiday in Portugal because he does not want to be influenced by the news in the Press".

Now why would Gerry's legal eagle request for that one to be asked again? Could that be seen as leading the witness?

Based on the above, he should have been locked up on the spot, IMO.

Hi Di, thanks for all of that info.

Re the nosebleed - what a load of old tosh! Whether my child suffered from regular nosebleeds or not, I think that I would have remembered if it had occurred whilst on holiday and, more to the point, what sort of memory-deficient parent can't remember having cleaned up the blood?? Especially to clinically scrubbed standards? ummm...!

From memory, the Mcs also said it could have been her knee that was cut on her way up to the plane. Again, blood in that quantity, which had been scrubbed meticulously, could neither have come from a cut knee nor have been removed so effectively as to have been dismissed in a flippant manner!

Hope,

When I read the new thread. I thought perhaps this could have been another possible sighting spot with a map but it was scuppered because the notes were left behind during the great scarper!

Dylan,

They will never get any of my money, full stop! Great post I read of yours on the other thread.

Implied from the words in the article that visiting a remote area like this and receiving/making calls from this area is significant to the investigation.

Maybe Justine knew exactky what this area meant to the couple and as such the map got 'misplaced' ensuring a hefty fee was paid to her for her services. Maybe she was a canny girl as aspiring politicians can very well be. Possibilities for this area being significant are few. Here are three of them.

1) Lovely area for the couple to run around away from the media. Maybe the unexplained marks are Orienteering marks !
2) A visually stimulating landscape to provide stunning photo opportunities. Wasn't an editing suite made available for them.
3)Burial ground

Nancy, this is the problem with Gina, even when she is being far more frank, and this post is refreshing in the main, we still get those excusatory phrases ! On the McCann's account they made a conscious and clearly well infored choice to leave their little children every night, who they also left in the creche every day. I wrote the other night that Martin Warner only include morning free creche in the price. For afternoons as well, that would have involved another £150 fee per child. This does explain why it becomes clear the rest of the TAPAS did not leave their kids in the creche in the afternoon as well. They did not want to pay for that and they did not want to neglect their children in that way either. I think Jane Tanner's comments would suggest she does indeed feel guilty about her behaviour in leaving her children like that at night but felt obliged to go with the flow. At least she is prepared to admit that. Childcare experts often refer to emotional abuse and neglect. That is what Kate and Gerry were undoubtedly doing. Children need love, playing with, cuddles, nurturing, taking to the beach etc. The McCanns children were treated like three orphans even having to be taken to the beach by creche workers on what was supposed to be their holiday as well. This is highly neglectful, selfish and abusive. Children who are treated in this way feel very insecure, nervous and unloved. They can grow up with a severe problem that can last for life. Gina should equate the further leaving the children even after Maddie went missing, dumping them in the creche and jetting off on a private jet to put their sickening plans into action as an example of the most appalling neglect and abuse. An uneducated thug of a parent who has been literally dragged up just might not know any better. There can be no such excuse for Kate and Gerry McCann, they would have had to study child welfare and psychology. Kate, in her role as GP would have to become involved in case conferences concerning abused and neglected children, but, on her own account, Maddie woke up crying, so did Amelie, Maddie complained and she went and done it again. As a result case conferences (which are highly confidential) would have had to be held in UK about her. This is a bizarre situation. This is not an error of judgment, Gina, this is cold blooded abuse! Maddie, a little girl who they know full well, is disturbed, wakes up and gets into bed with mom and dad. But they leave her alone with just her two year old siblings in a strange place in the dark, with the door unlocked, apparently! Forgive my anger but "error of judgment", dear, dear! Oh and of course Nancy it is not directed at you, but Gina for feeling the need to placate those abusive thugs in that way, just why does she go there and pretend it a normal place where she can chat about this case?

Have they printed one single statement on their blogs now they have been released. If they are so convinced these people are all innocent, then why not!

Hiya Claudia

I think it is very incriminating that Gerry puts forward the suggestion that Maddie had a nose bleed to explain her blood found in the apartment. Why even suggest that, if, as he says he did not know whether she had one or not.

The lead prosecutor in Portugal concluded on the evidence that Maddie had died. Gerry only serves to confirm that! Guilty people always seek to explain away the evidence and he has just never stopped doing this has he. But there is a major piece of evidence he knows just cannot be found

"well find the body and prove we killed her"

and they have the cheek to wonder why Goncalo is so convinced that Maddie died and they are involved!!

Unknown said...

BT, I know Gerry has said and done some really stupid things, but making a plan of the burial site, I would be staggered if he was that stupid!

I am sure the PJ thought the same, far more likely to be another of their red herrings!

I do not think they buried her, that would always provide a risk of her being found and Gerry's words confirm he was certain there is no risk of that. I do think items went up the tip though, Gerry clearly had an unnatural affection for visiting the tip. This most definitely NOT something either

a) holiday makers would dream of doing

or

b) something distraught parents who had their child abducted would dream of doing. I wonder if that report of him dumping a fridge and buying a new one is true?

Hiya Zodiac

thinking it through further the Team McCann action plan was always about sending the police off on a wild goose chase, demanding they follow up all those ahem sightings and leads that they themselves were paying to provide from "their" fund.

Gerry is a plotting schemer who derives some amusement I believe from his little schemes to confuse. There is nothing in the above report to say how they know Justine left those photos and plans etc. The McCanns clearly knew from day one they were under suspicion. Gerry wanted to send them off on one I think, but the PJ have studied psychopathy!

Unknown said...

Hiya Dillie

Oh I forgot there was another suggestion as to where Maddie's blood found in the apartment came from, the cut knee getting on to the plane.

So hang on a minute guys that was getting on the plane..so, after the three hour or whatever flight, the cut opened back up and sprayed blood up two walls behind the sofa, crikey you would think doctors would know that sounds a bit unlikely:-)))

Not that it is the only thing they have said that sounds unlikely, hence, too late, they have now shut up.

In the Leics paper recently, the 15th I think (on Joana Morais) Oakley International (from America what) and Metodo 3 are no longer employed but could be called back if the files reveal anything. Oh, Gerry says doing that is "expensive". Ummm well your costs and those of your brother have to be covered, I guess, Gerry, on this "small team that includes former police experience". Gerry has had former police experience! How much do you want to bet the one and only member of that ahem team that does have police experience is ex constable Mark Williams Thomas, who has now gone very quiet on the McCann case but is probably still making a nice living out of being such a dishonest little prat!

Unknown said...

Man admits Rachel Nickell killing

Rachel Nickell's killer has been finally brought to justice 16 years after she was brutally stabbed and assaulted in front of her young son.

Convicted sex killer Robert Napper admitted carrying out the attack on Wimbledon Common which shocked the nation and triggered one of the biggest manhunts in recent police history.

Broadmoor patient Napper, 42, pleaded guilty to manslaughter at the Old Bailey on Thursday and his plea was accepted on the grounds of his diminished responsibility.

Telling him he would be held in Broadmoor top security hospital indefinitely, Mr Justice Griffiths Williams said: "You are on any view a very dangerous man."

Speaking on the steps of the Old Bailey, Miss Nickell's father Andrew said: "We sincerely hope that, whatever the court says, that he will spend the rest of his life in a totally secure environment to protect all other people."

Napper's plea means one of the most high-profile crimes ever dealt with by Scotland Yard has finally been solved. But it is unlikely to bring an end to controversy surrounding the case with questions marks still hanging over the original investigation.

A senior officer admitted on Thursday that Napper could have been arrested before the Wimbledon Common murder after his mother reported an earlier rape.

Miss Nickell, 23, was stabbed 49 times at the south London beauty spot in a ferocious attack witnessed by her two-year-old son Alex. Police became convinced local loner Colin Stagg was the killer and relied too heavily on a profiler during the inquiry.

Original suspect Mr Stagg was freed by an Old Bailey judge in September 1994 who criticised police for using a "honey-trap" undercover policewoman to try to make him confess.

Mr Stagg, 45, spent 13 months in custody and endured more than a decade of speculation that he was the killer of Miss Nickell. This year, he was awarded £706,000 compensation from the Home Office and the Met Police have apologised to him.

Hi Viv and everyone. Just nipped in to say well done on the 3As Viv, totally agree with you about the dangers of someone like Bennett getting involved in what must remain a possible continued criminal investigation of individual criminal acts. On the day when ad hoc groups like the Madeleine Foundation take over this work from the courts and the police, we can forget all about justice for anyone.
