Kate and Gerry McCann are considering legal action to stem the endless tide of smears against themselves and their friends in the Portuguese media.
They have suffered a hurtful whispering campaign implying they or members of the group they dined with on the night their four-year-old daughter Madeleine disappeared had been involved in her murder or abduction.
The couple have endured the slurs with dignity, but now they appear to be ready to fight back.

Top Portuguese TV presenter Sandra Felgueiras is said to have 'accused' Madeleine's mother
And one particular target appears to have fallen into their sights - glamorous Portuguese TV reporter Sandra Felgueiras.
For the Portuguese people, the blonde broadcaster has become the face of the Madeleine story, bringing live updates to their living rooms on national television station RTP.
But the McCanns are incensed over at least one live broadcast by Miss Felgueiras, 30, in which she is said to have implied Mrs McCann could have murdered her own daughter.
Now the McCanns are considering taking libel action under Portuguese human rights laws protecting the right to a 'good name', said a friend.
Police now believe Madeleine McCann may have died in the apartment
In the week leading up to the 100-day anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance, there was a flurry of media reports based on the police theory that the little girl died the night she vanished.
Some implied that the McCanns or their friends, with whom they were dining at the Mark Warner resort in Praia da Luz, were somehow involved in her disappearance.
A source close to the McCanns said: "This is about trying to stop lurid accusations being aired. She [Felgueiras] was outrageous that week in the run-up to the 100 days. She really was outrageous."
The source claimed Miss Felgueiras's report 'encouraged a media frenzy', adding: 'Both the McCanns are hard-working, law abiding professionals. It is very important to protect their reputation.'
The exact wording of Miss Felgueiras's live report is unknown, because nobody has specified which one of many is at issue.
Miss Felgueiras said last night she had no idea which report it might be and denied ever branding either of the McCanns a 'murderer'.
She said: "I never said that and I never insinuated anything like that. I never in my life put anyone under suspicion but just told viewers that police are investigating the possibility that Madeleine has died and that it is murder or an accident.
"I'm absolutely sure that everything I said was only what the police were telling us concerning this new lead of the investigation.
"If the McCanns presume that this is an accusation against them, then that is their assumption, not mine. My conscience is completely clear."
Miss Felgueiras, who has personally interviewed the McCanns on several occasions, added: "I am the most moderate reporter. Sometimes other channels talk about things that I refuse to talk about. I even made a live report saying everybody is innocent until they go to court.
"Also I never talk about Kate and Gerry in an isolated way, I always talk about the couple. So it's very strange to be accused of saying Kate did something."
The McCanns and their friends have been battling adverse publicity for the past three weeks following a series of leaks from Portuguese police to the local media.
The McCanns have been accused of doping their children to get them to sleep, leaving them alone for hours on end while getting drunk, and of mounting a cover-up.
Their holiday friends have been accused of giving conflicting accounts of the evening, and one, Dr Russell O'Brien, was forced to defend himself against the hurtful and untrue suggestion that he was 'missing' at the time Madeleine vanished.
Mr McCann is set to talk for the first time about how becoming "household names' has taken its toll on his family.
He will travel to the Edinburgh International Television Festival this weekend where he has been invited to speak about the "double-edged sword" of launching such a wide public appeal to try to get his daughter back.

Joe/Di I think you are very close to the truth there. The prosecution of Kate and Gerry McCann could wait I think it would be felt, rather than cause deep embarrassment to one who is already not doing so well. I think the plan will be to replace him! I have always been prepared to admit, he showed a grave error of judgment, particularly in one who has so much experience! I think his motivations were no doubt good and he was vulnerable having lost his own baby, but even so, he really should not have got involved! It has certainly NOT done his reputation any good at all, but how could he as PM stand up and comment on a criminal case such as this and say he made a mistake, he certainly could not do that BEFORE they are convicted because that would without doubt, render any conviction absolutely untenable. He has put himself in a very difficult position IMO! It is a great pity that man who on the face so much adores and stands for children has done so much harm! Not to mention the waste of taxpayers money in Portugal and here! Had they been promptly prosecuted much expense could have been saved. But at least, when they are, they will make sure the case sticks, preparation is the key with a difficult case, which it is. There is no doubt about that, Kate and Gerry have done a lot to cover their tracks. The circumstantial evidence is overwhelming but they just brazen it out!

As that is what I have said all along. GB got involved with this case because he was a new DAD, plus it would look good for his career. Several other Labour supporters jumped on the bandwagon, then unfortunately, when discrepancies started to come out, and the McCann's were being implicated along with their friends, they had nowhere to turn.

I have just been reading a thread on the 3A's putting the question of why the McCanns haven't sued GA for the allegations he makes in his book (not yet published in English unfortunately), and Tyra is really getting some stick for her sycophantic posts. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but she is banging her head against a brick wall if she thinks she will change the antis' views. And I echo everything the antis say on that thread.
Just why do the McCanns not sue GA?
If I was completely innocent of my child's disappearance, I would have got my famously successful team of lawyers to sue his socks off - what innocent parent wouldn't and not just for the money they might make, but for proving their innocence!
The reason they don't, in my opinion, is because they know there is a very strong case to answer, bearing in mind the endless discrepancies in their stories and that includes their tapas friends, who would no doubt also have some soul searching questions to answer!
To all trolls I would say - " this should be about Justice for Madeleine, who would be here today if it were not for the selfish actions of her parents".

How right you are. GA has gone out of his way during interviews and in his book pointing the finger at the McCann's. If they were innocent there is more than enough libel to sue. Of course having to appear in court, swear on the bible and then prove their innocence could just be a little bit tricky.

Friends who were with the parents of Madeleine McCann when she disappeared in Portugal are to be paid £375,000 in libel damages by Express Newspapers.
Sky's Crime correspondent Martin Brunt said: "The Tapas 7, friends of Kate and Gerry McCann - those who were on holiday with them in Portugal last year - are to receive apologies tomorrow morning in the High Court from Express Newspapers, and they will share a payout of £375,000.
"I'm told an apology will be read out in the court and then there'll be statements from the McCanns and the 'Tapas 7' lawyers.
"There will also be apologies in the Daily Express and Daily Star newspapers and we can expect something similar in the Sunday Express."

Well its only right and proper that the rubbish Express Group paid out. The rag must have made a lot of money printing allegations and defamatories day after day. Since the case was closed the rag has had no choice but to pay up. A trade off in reality, and cheap at the price.
If the Tapas lot read the settlement often enough perhaps they will believe their own press and how they were wronged by the rag, and then they woke up. It is no surpise to me that they sought money since they knew the Express would roll over. They were never prepared to help the PJ and covered for each other instead then taking money form the rag is nothing. Who would want friends like them. Scary that so many people of the same nature are associated in one place or call each other friends. I am sure they have all or will make considerable sums now and in the future, and the Express is really a "not guilty " vindication to the world. The McCanns got it so the Tapas 7 needed it as well, like a Papal blessing or the Queens pardon. I have no doubt that books, and a film etc will come out sometime. Pity that half the world do not believe them IMO.

I agree with Joe that the Express has got it's come uppance for the lurid and unsubstantiated headlines regarding Madeleine's disappearance, but at the same time the tapas parents who left their children must be aware that they are all regarded as child neglecters along with the McCanns so they shouldn't behave as though they are poor defamed victims. It sticks in the craw that they are all going to make money out of Madeleine's disappearance when along with the McCanns they went out and left their youngsters, one of whom was vomiting and the parents still went out after knowing that.
I hope the blood money brings all of them nothing but shame and misery which is what they all deserve.
As for getting to the pearly gates - I doubt they will ever reach them - they deserve the fast and hot descent if you ask me!

Well I will be very keen to learn why it is that the lead name on the Writ, Tanner and her very quiet partner O'Brien will not be there to celebrate their victory over The Daily Express at the High Court tomorrow. It does not seem that one of the complaints is they neglected their children, because on their own account clearly they did!

No private investigators currently instructed, and a pot of apparently almost a million again. I will also be interested to learn what the McScamms are going to tell us next:-)))
Kate stated that she cannot put a price on the life of a child, not unless she is called Madeleine McCann of course, in which case it will be as much as they can keep on scamming.

Well the only people Carter Ruck represent are themselves, the fat fees they can charge. I read earlier they did not advise Jamieson he was going to lose and so it cost him £75000 in costs!
We will wait and see what it costs the TAPAS 0 but one thing is for sure neither Carter Ruck or Express Newspapers have their best interests at heart.
I am interested in the timing of this. Given the McCanns had the payout months ago, why has it taken until now to settle the rest? I can only conclude that it is again for the spin that can be derived from it. My old mum said oh they must be innocent when the McCanns got the payout (until I explained otherwise). That was clearly what people were meant to believe. So some months later, when things again look real bad for the TAPAS 9 out comes another publicity stunt, like rabbits out of a hat, it is all about timing, or as government spin doctors would say, "burying bad news"!

Maybe I should just exlain a little more what I mean, libel actions have to be brought within 12 months at the latest of the offending publication. So this is clearly old stuff they are complaining about and must have been on the cusp of being out of time! Which does point to tactics! Bit like how the McCanns waited for about 12 months worth of reports (almost!!) dozens and dozens of them before they decided Express were hurting them! NOt hurting their bank balance in the meantime as the watched the damages clock up! Very cynical stuff. It is usual in a defamation case for just one or two offending articles to be published and the person who claims they have been defamed takes very prompt action "to preserve their reputation". I do not think the McCanns give two hoots about their reputation, they not that is a lost cause, but money, that is another matter, what it is all about, oh and self preservation of course! No preservation for little Madeleine, not even a headstone!

The only news we are hearing about Madeleine lately is about money - whether it be from people suing the media, or Portuguese police selling their books. This case is not over; there is a little girl out there somewhere, who needs to be found (dead or alive). Justice must be done for Madeleine. We need to see some action on this front.

These people show their true nature at every turn. They refuse to return to Portugal for a reconstruction of the night little Maddie disappeared whilst left alone with her 2 year old brother and sister, yet they turn up - en masse - for a fat pay out. Donating the money to the Fund is a joke - since it is all there at the McCann's disposal anyway! The Fund is obscene, and is tantamount to making money off of a criminal activity ....in this case CHILD NEGLECT. They should hang their heads in shame!

The parents of Madeilene Mc anne should of been prosecuted for neglect and leaving their child . This is a bloody outrage that the bunch of holiday freinds get compensation for a crime commited by their so called holiday mates... Shame on the lot of you and I hope you all have sleepless nights for the horror you caused for going on the ****.I have taken my kids abroard for years and never left them on their own in a hotel or apartment. The ring of injustice is closing. Those children were left in a strange place by their so called OH SO!! caring parents. Their friends (of the parents not the children) were quite happy to wine and dine knowing full well the children were left. Did they have children of their own, that they left? They are happy to take money for their hurt feelings, but were unable to go to Portugal to reconstruct that fateful night, if they had done that and could have 'clarified' the timelines, then maybe people would have thought they may be justified in sueing the paper! But sadly none of them, including the Mccanns would go back, but chose to stay in the UK and 'sue' the newspaper instead. I dont see many 'stones being unturned' just money grabbing.

Although I followed the case fairly well, I could never find definite answers to the following: Does anyone know?What happened to Mr McCann's missing tennis bag?What was the final outcome of the visit and talks Portuguese police had with the UK forensic people? This was to re-check the DNA of old blood found in the boot of the hired car. Were the results inconclusive?It always seemed as if once they'd been to the Uk, answers were a bit blurry on this subject and the press stopped focusing on it anymore.

I have yet to see genuine emotion from the McCanns. As a parent of a little girl one year older than Maddie I know that I would be devastated. To hell with what the newspapers report that little girl should be the most important thing for them. I know a parent wouldn't want to let the story go cold and be forgotten but shame on them, from day one they have been seeking out the cameras and newspapers trying to grab attention for themselves. If they are such great parents then why did they leave three defenceless children alone? Checking every few minutes is not good enough, real parents know that children need someone with them at all times. I hope that karma or fate or whatever comes back to haunt them and their "friends".

They continue to gather money for some witch hunt that everybody knows that is going nowhere. When the papers protected them, they gave interviews to everyone (police not included, since all people that where with the mcann gave more details to newspapers than on there statements to the police force).If the papers talked about the other side of the story (all of them lied when they gave evidence to the police that 1 of them was going to watch all the kids in shifts of 15 minutes tops) the papers get to the courts. From the very beginning since Madeleine's disappearance every newspaper was skating on thin ice with some of the headlines they were putting out. Yet now, the same newspapers seem to have made a u-turn and are are very defensive of the McCanns and their friends. Do we think the reason may be that they don't want to end up in court as the Express have done? I think from now on we will only hear facts in the newspapers regarding the Madeleine case as speculation and accusations prove costly.

Well I would just like to say. I hope the whole damn lot who are involved and support this evil force that has been released into the world all become victims of their own consciences (if they have any) just like Lady MacBeth in Act V. In Act V she can no longer compartmentalise her actions and her conscience consumes her. She is left with the raw reality of her actions and realises there is no justification for her actions.
At the end of the play, Lady Macbeth is destroyed with hallucinations and plagued with mental anguish. Now did I read somewhere that the mother who claims her child was taken has seen her in her home! Lady MacBeth is also reminded of how many lives have been lost. Well just how many lives have been ruined because 9 people could not be bothered to look after their children properly? These people made the conscious decision collectively to wine and dine approx. 100mts away in a Tapas Bar whilst their children were left alone in holiday flats. That is a raw reality! Eddie and Keela seem to suggest that at least one life has been taken. Whose life?
Lady MacBeth has put herself outside of the sensibilities of life, law, morality and order. Although she gains something from her deeds, she gives up far more. Who does that remind us of? Lady MacBeth is lost in an endless nightmare unable to sleep. Mmmm how many mothers with young children are up at 4am on their computers? Lady MacBeth is tormented and unable to free herself from her never-ending nightmare. She is locked in her own conscience and cannot escape. Lady MacBeth talks in her sleep and by doing so she implicates herself and her husband in their own wicked actions without knowledge or intention. Lady MacBeth also reveals that her husband is afraid and she constantly boosts his confidence. Mmmm who does that remind us of? A line from this soliloquy is "Out, damned spot!" Lady MacBeth imagines she sees Duncan's blood on her hands. from the night of his murder, and cannot wash it off. The Doctor and Gentlewoman (imo bloggers on the Fora) hear all this and (they are not stupid) know what's going on. Another quote from this scene is "All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, oh, oh!" This is ironic considering that in Act I she was calling up spirits to fill her with evil. It seems that Lady Macbeth is not as tough as she thought! Mmmm who does that remind us of!

I don't think these people have a conscience between them because if they did they wouldn't have left their children in the first place and then tried their darndest to make a pot of gold each.
Actually the comparison could perhaps be nearer the truth than we imagine, because the way the McCanns seem to be revered by the hierarchy, Gerry could well end up with a knighthood and Kate become his Lady McCann LOL!!

The third agreement this year
In this case against the Express group, the McCanns and their friends complained about approximately 12 articles – which accused them of covering up the truth about what happened to Madeleine or allegations that they lied to the police and that they had been involved in the child’s disappearance.
This is already the third time this year that several British newspapers accept an agreement to pay compensation over the Maddie case, in order to avoid a trial over defamation.
In March, the same Express group had to pay 550 thousand pounds (705 thousand euros) of compensation to the McCanns because of a series of articles about the disappearance of Madeleine in newspapers “Daily Star” and “Daily Star Sunday” – articles that were considered to be defamatory and damaging to the honour and the image of Kate and Gerry. “That time, the McCanns also donated all of the money to the Find Madeleine fund”, Mitchell recalled.
In July, Robert Murat received 600 thousand pounds (770 thousand euros) from 11 British newspapers over moral damages due to over 100 articles.
Detectives take a break
The contracts with the detectives from Spanish agency Método 3 and with the investigators from the Oakley firm have ceased, Clarence Mitchell revealed. “The McCanns remain in contact with some detectives and whenever necessary, they will hire more again”, the spokesman said.

What is this powerful thing that is causing such a barrier to Madeleine being properly represented ?
I distinctly remember seeing not longer after Maddie disappeared a main tv channel like Sky or BBC show a report with the fact that a private plane left that night. The implication being from the editor/producer of the news report was obviously that this was an important issue that the viewer should consider.
It is rarely mentioned (remember John Pilger's point about how an item gets out and then they scrap it when a bigwig steps in)and I have not seen anything regarding a private plane yet from Amaral over this.
As I have mentioned before I am sure I subsequently heard or it was stated at that time that a senior civil servant was on the plane. So does that mean the civil servant was sent out to GET this person out quickly or was the senior civil servant involved in something with that group of friends that involved children perhaps? Who knows.
This was discussed a few times on the DE chatroom.
This represents a bleak point for Madeleine and her justice however I am still very hopeful the truth/facts will out even it if takes a lot longer than we hope.

The Maddie fund needs to be taken over by a third, independant party. The McCanns have thrown money at some PI firm who not only failed to find Maddie but also promised her home by Christmas. The tapas 7 should return to Portugal, especailly the one who managed to give a discription of a "scruffy looking" chap acting strangely. We go abroad with our 4 year old grandaughter and don't leave her for a minute, all doors and windows are locked at night and we have air conditioning on if need be. They should all be ashamed, thought they were doing her a favour by checking up on her every half an hour.....shameful

Let us see that money being put to good use in the search for Madeleine. It seems strange that these top notch private investigators have come up with nothing at all so far and have subsequently been let go. I would have thought that a number of bounty hunters would have jumped on this case in an effort to claim the reward as well as international fame. That little girl is still out there somewhere and needs to be found (dead or alive). I do not have the impression that anyone is out there on the ground actually physically looking for Madeleine. I hope I am wrong.

Curiouser and curiouser...Apparently the express did not live up to the Mccanns standards, the portuguese police did not live up to the Mccann standards, the portuguese press and judicial systen likewise. There appear to have been several different private investigation companies - none of whom live up to their standards either. Nobody is good enough for them.

I think the Tapas 9 should have returned to Portugal to take part in a serious reconstruction to help find Madeleine. Why did they not? I think that it was hurtful, hurtful for them not to do so. I think that Kate McCann should not have refused to answer some 40 police questions which would have helped to find what happened tp Madeleine. What are the friends doing now to help find Madfeleine?

STOP harassing this poor family and help find that child. Everyone has failed Madeleine and it has taken over a year to clear her families name when everyone should have been concentrating on the search for Madeleine. They were not right to leave the child but no one can change that now. I myself am not in the privileged position of living in a glass house. I too have made silly mistakes in my life but I have not had to suffer the terrible consequence Madeleine and her family have endured so I find it hard to persecute others as easily as some perfect people in our society today. Good point about Maddies eye defect, the files have shown up it was a fleck, also the colour of her eyes was not totally explained.
These were fundamental to the first statements to find a missing little girl, yet even then they preferred to mislead. Unbelievable.
To the other side who are probably feeling very smug at this moment, just remember the points that we are raising here and take note.
This is not about getting one over on each other, this is about a missing child 3 years old, and alone, very alone :o(((

I know the exact colour of my childrens eyes, plus their partners and my in laws.

US-based firm Oakley International was taken on by the Find Madeleine Fund earlier this year on a £500,000 six-month contract.
The company was chosen by double-glazing tycoon Brian Kennedy, who has promised to back the McCanns financially to help solve the mystery of the disappearance of their daughter.
Oakley was hired to monitor a telephone hotline, carry out detective work and review CCTV footage from around the world of possible sightings of the missing girl.
But Mr Kennedy became concerned by the level of Oakley’s £43,500 ($74,155) expenses claim in the first month of the contract.
The company’s contract was terminated at the end of August after Mr Kennedy had become concerned at its lack of results.
Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for the Find Madeleine Fund, said that Oakley International was no longer working on the case.
He said: “The contract with Oakley was just one among many that have been entered into during the search for Madeleine.
“While Oakley did some valuable work, particularly in the early stages, its contract, like many others, has now come to a close.
“The search for Madeleine is continuing, however, using other resources and the performance of other contractors is constantly reviewed and monitored.
“Kate and Gerry and the backers will leave no stone unturned in the search for Madeleine.”
Madeleine has not been seen since May last year, when she disappeared from the family’s apartment in the Portuguese holiday resort of Praia da Luz shortly before her fourth birthday.
Former police officers are now being interviewed by Mr Kennedy to take over responsibility for the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance.
Mr Kennedy, 47, estimated to be worth about £250million, made his money in double-glazing and home-improvement ventures with companies including Everest windows.
He became involved with the McCanns after being moved by their plight during the period they were made formal suspects – arguidos – in Madeleine’s disappearance.
Portuguese prosecutors dropped the couple’s arguido status in July.
A spokesman for Oakley International said: “We carried out our instructions from the Fund professionally and responsibly in accordance with our agreement.”

Stella dear, the percentage of the population that comment, or are interested in this case is probably something like 0.0000001%. If the Tories win the next election it will be because of the current financial mess of the UK, not the Madeleine Mccann case.

If I give him the benefit of the doubt I deduce that he wants us to believe that information about what really happened was passed to a friend of his. This could only have be given by someone involved to ??? who passed it on & maybe one again. Now why would the tapas group have a pact of silence then tell one outsider something, knowing full well they would have to be able to trust them with their life. A very dangerous game to play IMO especially now jealousy could set in with a big payout. I would be very interested in hearing the Doc's explanation to this as it makes little sense to me.

The language being used about an abduction is one of certainty ie an opinion being dressed up as a fact. As I have mentioned before this action is actually taught to 8 yr old children in schools in order to try to persuade people to accept your opinion.
Thus just like Jeffrey Archer this group of people can claim monies under legal rules but the rules we discuss here relate to ethics and morality. WHY ? because it is more than likely that an innocent 3 yr old has died and we wish to represnt her soul and find out who was ultimately responsible for her disappearance and likely death. If the stones are turned over and a picture of the parents is there then so be it. What is important is that this girl should be represented. And Docmac along with the majority of the british public want that investigation carried out. Not some sort of cover up to protect egos and status etc.

I’ve just been thinking about yesterday’s payout to the T7 from Express Newspapers. What bothers me the most is not that they were paid damages as the Express should have been more careful how they reported the T7s involvement in this case but that the T7 say it is being paid directly to the Find Madeleine Fund. Surely this is perpetuating a fraud! Under the noses of the World and its mother this sham continues - I am absolutely appalled.

During the D.E. battle with the Anti's I decided to stir things up a bit. I was sick and tired of these 'creeps' constantly having a go at Gerry and Kate and so put out a false statement that I'd read in one of the Daily papers that the McCanns legal team were compiling a list of all those posting slanderous statements on the DE blog and were going to be sued for damages!. Christ Almighty, you should have seen the Panic that little bit of fun caused, "Which paper was it in?" some asked, "Can't remember it was a day or two ago!" I responded. "They can take me to court if they want, I'm entitled to my opinions!" said some bravely, their little ar..s twitching like a cat on a hot tin roof. "I've only ever stated the truth and they can't get me for that!" said some of the others crossing themselves. I suggested that if I was them they should get their houses valued to make sure they had enough assets to meet the legal costs and damage awards. It was magnificent, I was over the moon and PMS for days seeing them writhing in agony, it took a long time to die down! I think some were considering leaving the country before the Sh.t hit the fan! Most of the present day Anti's won't remember that hair raising event but I'll never forget it, it was Great, Fabulous!
