McCanns may sue over claims they killed Madeleine

By SAM GREENHILL
Last updated at 23:40 23 August 2007

Kate and Gerry McCann are considering legal action to stem the endless tide of smears against themselves and their friends in the Portuguese media.

They have suffered a hurtful whispering campaign implying they or members of the group they dined with on the night their four-year-old daughter Madeleine disappeared had been involved in her murder or abduction.

The couple have endured the slurs with dignity, but now they appear to be ready to fight back.

Scroll down for more...

 Sandra Felgueiras

Top Portuguese TV presenter Sandra Felgueiras is said to have 'accused' Madeleine's mother

And one particular target appears to have fallen into their sights - glamorous Portuguese TV reporter Sandra Felgueiras.

For the Portuguese people, the blonde broadcaster has become the face of the Madeleine story, bringing live updates to their living rooms on national television station RTP.

But the McCanns are incensed over at least one live broadcast by Miss Felgueiras, 30, in which she is said to have implied Mrs McCann could have murdered her own daughter.

Now the McCanns are considering taking libel action under Portuguese human rights laws protecting the right to a 'good name', said a friend.

Police now believe Madeleine McCann may have died in the apartment

In the week leading up to the 100-day anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance, there was a flurry of media reports based on the police theory that the little girl died the night she vanished.

Some implied that the McCanns or their friends, with whom they were dining at the Mark Warner resort in Praia da Luz, were somehow involved in her disappearance.

A source close to the McCanns said: "This is about trying to stop lurid accusations being aired. She [Felgueiras] was outrageous that week in the run-up to the 100 days. She really was outrageous."

The source claimed Miss Felgueiras's report 'encouraged a media frenzy', adding: 'Both the McCanns are hard-working, law abiding professionals. It is very important to protect their reputation.'

The exact wording of Miss Felgueiras's live report is unknown, because nobody has specified which one of many is at issue.

Miss Felgueiras said last night she had no idea which report it might be and denied ever branding either of the McCanns a 'murderer'.

She said: "I never said that and I never insinuated anything like that. I never in my life put anyone under suspicion but just told viewers that police are investigating the possibility that Madeleine has died and that it is murder or an accident.

"I'm absolutely sure that everything I said was only what the police were telling us concerning this new lead of the investigation.

"If the McCanns presume that this is an accusation against them, then that is their assumption, not mine. My conscience is completely clear."

Miss Felgueiras, who has personally interviewed the McCanns on several occasions, added: "I am the most moderate reporter. Sometimes other channels talk about things that I refuse to talk about. I even made a live report saying everybody is innocent until they go to court.

"Also I never talk about Kate and Gerry in an isolated way, I always talk about the couple. So it's very strange to be accused of saying Kate did something."

The McCanns and their friends have been battling adverse publicity for the past three weeks following a series of leaks from Portuguese police to the local media.

The McCanns have been accused of doping their children to get them to sleep, leaving them alone for hours on end while getting drunk, and of mounting a cover-up.

Their holiday friends have been accused of giving conflicting accounts of the evening, and one, Dr Russell O'Brien, was forced to defend himself against the hurtful and untrue suggestion that he was 'missing' at the time Madeleine vanished.

Mr McCann is set to talk for the first time about how becoming "household names' has taken its toll on his family.

He will travel to the Edinburgh International Television Festival this weekend where he has been invited to speak about the "double-edged sword" of launching such a wide public appeal to try to get his daughter back.

Hiya all

what a great miracle that little boy, just three years was saved by quick acting firemen.

I just cannot believe how utterly callous and negligent some parents are but thank God he is safe!

Maddie would have had plenty of time to try boiling an egg whilst left in an apparently unlocked apartment! No such luck for her!

Bye all,

Read you later or tomorrow.

Off out for supper. We are being very uncultured as we are taking our child out for supper with us. I do hope my neighbours and other diners will not report us to Social Services for being so negligent.

Cláudia said...

Zodiac, you're absolutely right. The egg is obviously the culprit. Juts like in Madeleine's case. Don't forget the sketch of the eggman. Eggs are bad and should be punished.

Cláudia said...

By, Zodiac. I for one won't report you. But only because 'I am very much into you'.

What a terrible story all abused children go through hell and some never recover from the ordeal this poor boy has a death sentance hanging over his head because of it.

Reading article like this futher my discust that Gerry and Kate could ever utter the words we have no reason to belive Madeleine has been harmed or even force a smile for the rest of their lives.

They left her home alone and if she was taken they are fully to blame for putting her in terible danger. They cant belive she is alive to act the way they do they have put her behind them.

As for his blogs me me me again poor Madeleine deserves the world not the way her name has been used to raise money.

docmac said...

Cheers, Isis

I'm off myself.

Hiya Claudia

Eggs can give off a really terrible odour when they are bad, just like a deadly gas, hydrogen sulphide. That must have been what was in the rear of Kate and Gerry's car!

Evening Viv and all:)

Have had a quick scroll on last days post, and could not see this anywhere...:

Gerry's Blog
Day 533: 17/10/2008 Day: 533

Most of you will have seen yesterday that our seven friends, who were on holiday with us in Portugal when Madeleine was abducted, have been awarded libel damages. The Express group of newspapers admitted that many of the stories written about our friends were completely untrue and without foundation. They have apologised and paid £375,000 in to Madeleine’s Fund. This money will be put to good use for the ongoing search for our beautiful little girl.

Our friends were under no obligation to pay the damages in to the fund. However they have from day one indicated that this was what they wanted and have clearly demonstrated that finding Madeleine is of the utmost importance to them. They, like us, believe there is a very good chance Madeleine is alive and can be found. Thank you Fiona, David, Russell, Jane, Matt, Rachael and Diane.

We would also like to thank our friends in Portugal. They continue to hold a monthly Friday night vigil in Praia da Luz vigil to pray for Madeleine and other missing children, like so many others around the world.

---

They are all SAINTS :-((((

"And they clearly demonstrated that finding Madeleine is of the utmost importance to them."
I'm sure Amaral will be able to use them as acters in his documentary, and some of this money paid by DE should for sure be eare-marked five-star-hotel in Portugal for all the Tapas-members to do a re-union and a reconstruction!

Oh dear I didn't realise Doc had retired from his cynical duties (typo meant clinical). Wonder if he has started a knitting club or maybe bowling. Knowing Doc it will probably be after dinner speeches. Oh well he used to be tough and ruthless but now he is rough and toothless. Wonder why we didn't get an invite to his retirement party? We could have presented him with a silver mop.

18 October 2008 18:01

Sorry to disappoint you. I did not have a farewell do, having elected to ask the holding company to make a donation to the Nelson Mandela Childrens' Fund in lieu of the expenses that would have been incurred in paying for a silly party. Of course you will be happy to know that the queen's grandsons are currently taking part in a motorcycle event in SA that will benefit the same charity, amongst others.

Just from JM site:

"...The story that is told by the former Portuguese police officer Gonçales [sic] Amaral in his book, published on the 20th July 2008, "Maddie - The truth of the lie" - and which for legal reasons should be called a fairy tale - is free from such teutonic gloom and takes place in Praia da Luz in the Algarve, which is mainly frequented by members of the English and German middle class...."

And?
You are as Portuguese as my kettle.

Hiya all

I think Gerry rushes the writing of his blog and in the circumstances should take far longer than I do, to avoid those inevitable slips up of his:

friends were under no obligation to pay the damages in to the fund. However they have from day one indicated that this was what they wanted

Very much like him announcing just a few weeks after she had gone missing that he wanted an anniversary event to keep her in the public image, long term! That is the problem Gerry, from Day One as you put this was all one big manipulative rotten plan to cover up the death and disposal of your "beautiful little girl".

xx

Unknown said...

By the way Niki, hello and thanks for posting Gerry's blog! Yet more incriminating little slips ups, oh and he mentions Russell but he was not there, was he, not really very supportive of him, was it? Maybe he feels he did more than he should have, at the time..I wonder if he is well and back at work?

Hiya Doc,

well I wish Penelope would come back because she wrote some very interesting posts! As for Mariana, I know she is busy running her own blog. Given this lady even shows her pic on the internet, how pissed is Rosie tonight to suggest that was me. As for the other names, the only one I know is Josiepublic and, as you know, that is certainly not me!!!

Rosie is having a real good rant of late, something upset it. Why are you not so excited about the libel damages being paid to the TAPAS and going to the Find Maddie Fiddle too Rosie? Did something take the shine of that for you?? Who is looking for Maddie? Rosie? Is Gerry finding it impossible to find an ex British Policeman who is prepared to go with the abduction theory? Maybe he should go back to Spain!!

docmac said...

Isis, when next you log in, please be informed that you have earned your own nickname. It is either psoraiasis or psoriassis. Not quite sure which, as the poster can not seem to make up their mind and neither one is the correct spelling of the rather distressing skin condition that they are obviously referring to :-))))

BTW, 'poor old psoraiasis', did you know that many psoriasis sufferers commit suicide? Funny jibe, innit? Arsehole.

Cláudia said...

Doc, Poops has been more insulting to Tulip than to any anti. In fact, I think that was probably one of the most insulting things I've read. And that is from pro to pro. Real pros must feel so ashamed of/for her. I mean, those pros with no agenda. Those pros who just happen to believe that the McCanns are innocent.

docmac said...

It's the sparkling mineral water, Viv.

Unknown said...

Hiya Doc

Well one of my best friends suffers from that distressing skin condition and I do not think she would be amused. She is the one that works for Social Services..

How typical of Rosierant to make fun of people with disabilities. A bit like Bum claiming I should thank my ex employers for discriminating against me. It does take a very perverse and insensitive thinking style to support the gruesome twosome, as opposed to defenceless little children who are neglected by them, and worse!

Rednecks, eh?

A supporter of Republican presidential candidate John McCain and running-mate Sarah Palin went beyond a bumper sticker and named his new born daughter after the duo.

The child's name, Sarah McCain Palin Ciptak, however was a surprise to her mother. The parents had agreed to name the girl Ava Grace, but father Mark Ciptak instead filled out the birth certificate with the political name to draw attention to the candidates, he told local newspaper the Kingsport Times News.

He only later told his wife, Layla.

"To be sure, she was not quite fond of me or of what I had done, but we've had some time to talk it over, and she has been really supportive through it all," Ciptak told the newspaper.

Cláudia said...

Ok, Gina is a liar. But even so she doesn't deserve to be included in the same gang as Poops, does she?
And Bum, of course, was ressuscitated to stick the knife a bit deeper. I also find it very nice of them to publish private messages. Very dignified.

docmac said...

Evening!

Hello Viv, how long before your trip? I hope you have a great time and come back with happy memories :-)

Docmac,

"LOL yourself, you sad deluded cow. Viv was none of these people. Idiot."

I might have to hire you someday to insult on my behalf - how much do you charge? Great! :-))))

I saw in the Independent today that Iran will be ridding itself of the death sentence for minors. I wasn't aware that they did execute children (or put children on pending execution), but unfortunately, it hasn't been passed yet. What's worse is that a photo of a boy who committed a crime aged 15, just missed this new, potential law, was published. I don't know what he did and I don't care what he did, it made me feel sick. I sometimes fail to believe that I live in a world where children are put on death row and hung.

In the same instance, ICTOAN and Di posted that harrowing story about the mother who will most likely have to watch her son die as a result of what paedophiles did to him. It disgusts me so much but I stll can't find it in my heart to support capital punishment. I support suffering without death to show these monsters how it feels to be abused in such a way. Death is too quick and easy, and at least, if the judgement system gets it wrong, the accused still have a life to repair afterwards.

Some interesting comments in the news today about Barry George too. Still not sure what I think but the debate goes on!

Goodnight folks. Oh, and BT, just ignore that cr*p that is being said about you. You know what you posted & have shown what you posted and such comments against you are completely unfounded.

Unknown said...

Hiya Doc,

Well Scotland Yard are certainly not deluded about how dangerous Barry George is, a man with convictions for attempted rape and indecent assault and who went to try and see Diana, armed with a knife and coil of rope!! Miss Burley sounds absolutely terrified and unwell, poor lady, I can imagine her terror, knowing what happened to Jill.

"Scotland Yard is understood to have brought together a group of senior officers to determine the risk posed by Mr George, who is regarded as a threat to women. "

The Pros do not understand the concept of offenders posing a risk of harm, whether convicted or not. Kate and Gerry McCann still pose a serious risk of harm to the twins.

How many years are Kate and Gerry going to continue their ahem search for Maddie, until they get arrested I guess!

HUNT FOR DETECTIVE TO HEAD MADDY PROBE

Maddy’s been missing 18 months
Sunday October 19,2008
By Brendan Abbott Kate and Gerry McCann are reviewing their strategy as no major breakthrough has emerged in the hunt for Madeleine.

Millionaire businessman Brian Kennedy, their financial backer, is seeking a former high-ranking police detective to mastermind the private investigation.

He has interviewed several candidates and will see more in the coming weeks. Whoever takes on the job faces the mammoth task of assessing information gathered by many private detectives since Madeleine vanished 18 months ago.

The investigator will also have to read thousands of pages of Portuguese police files released in August and painstakingly translated.

The family’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the investigation was continuing in many countries as the McCanns study the files line by line.

Heart specialist Mr McCann said in his blog report last week: “Kate and I have been incredibly busy over the last couple of months since the files were made public.

Doc Rosierant always tried to tell you he had work published, now with the mention of psychics you just better believe it! Count up how many a's are in the article, it will mean something, honestly!

Claudia, did you know there are dark tunnels under PDL, Rosie does but they widen out into a bright and brilliant light when they get away with it! All a little premature I think!

THE TAPAS SEVEN’ - AN APOLOGY

Sunday October 19,2008
In articles published on 16 September and 2 December 2007 we suggested that Russell O’Brien and Jane Tanner, the holiday companions of Kate and Gerry McCann, might be named as official suspects by the Portuguese police investigating Madeleine’s disappearance and that Dr O’Brien might have helped to cover up the true facts.

We now accept that these suggestions should never have been made and were completely untrue.

We apologise to Russell O’Brien and Jane Tanner to whom we have agreed to pay substantial damages which they will be donating to the Find Madeleine Fund.

Well Doc, I wish the PJ would publish some of his emails and letters to them, and come to that, I wish someone would publish all those complaints he has made about me, that I have never heard anything of, we do love a good laugh. Come on Rosie publish and be damned!

I recall those terrifying words Rosierant uttered to me, you are going down, what moi, prison? In your dreams Pyschopops, I used to write reports sending people there, and made the odd visit, but never wanted to hang around!

I was just reading an article in The Times advocating the concept of children going to pubs/restaurants with their parents and guess who made a post, well given the rather weird sentiments expressed, it could be her. Madeleine is not even a very distant satellite, is she, and she certainly never got the chance to be The Sun, did she! Mum was far too "into her friends". Well Kate I think you are self-obsessed and your husband too for that matter! Your attitudes are Dickensian, children should be seen and parents should always be where those children can be heard, crying or whatever!

have to say that I agree with Olly. I don't think you should be taking children to a place where there are adults drinking and engaging in adult conversations about adult things. Our children grow up far too fast these days and see far too much on television and in the streets. Let's try and preserve their innocence for as long as possible. when I was a child the centre of any family was the family. Mum and Dad were the planets in the middle and the children were the satellites around them. Now the child is the sun and the parents whole lives revolve around their children. No wonder so many children end up so self involved.

Morning All

Just read Viv's post about BK looking for an English Detective to take over from the other people who cant do the imposible...

Team McCann will have to go very careful though there are many decent and honest ex detectives who would jump at the chance to take this case and jump through any hoop they put in their way to get them job.

Many ex detectives would happily play along get the case and work undercover to get to the truth of what happend to that poor little girl and expose them to the world for the liars they are. Think of the access they will have to these people to bug them know their every movement and laugh along with them whilst analysing their every move.

Poor BK who can he trust not to be working for Madeleine she deserves an adult to stand up for her and find out exactly what happend to her...

dylan said...

Goodness, everybody must be having a nice Sunday :-)

Hi Hope,

My guess is that it will take BK a long time to find a detective for the exact reasons that you mention. Who will it be next? Pet detective??!

Viv, you were up very late last night so I guess you've had a lie-in this morning ;-) Wrt Kate's restaurant post, it's just that sort of attitude and ignorance which gives the British a bad name for not involving children. On the continent and many other places in the world, parents quite happily take their kids along with no drunken, swearing adults around at all. In fact, I can't remember ever having witnessed any of the above when I've been out to dine. It all depends on where you take your children and I think most people can tell the difference between a nice, civilised eatery and some kebab shop in the heart of clubland! Kate obviously lends her custom to the latter ;-)

xx

Unknown said...

Hiya Dilly and Hope

Yes, I did have a lie in:-)

I think there is an old working class tradition in the UK that pubs are there for people to go to and get wrecked, alcohol is their entertainment. But there is a big increase in restaurants in the UK encouraging a more family outing with children being very welcome and pubs closing down at the rate of about 36 per week.

It was very clear from the comments about Goncalo Amaral that "Pro McCanns" just do not understand the continental way of life. Wine is an integral part of the meal and children join in from a very early age. The fact that the McCann party were drinking anything up to 14 bottles per night plus beer, cocktails etc, shows that they were very much practising their own Anglo Saxan ways rather that wanting to adopt a better way, of wine in moderation with the meal and more importantly with the children too! Unfortunately the fact they were in Portugal had no bearing on their abusive habits which do not include the children and are all about them getting wrecked and having "fun".

Unknown said...

Well good for you Mum21, just for once we agree, now perhaps you can talk some sense into that man who calls himself Rosie, but I know it will be difficult:-))) Otherwise we will have a Society where the killers and Rosie are right and they all roam free and the Police are wrong, every time, not a nice place to be. The view of an anti-social criminal and thug!

Get your facts right Viv.
I am a PRO but have never agreed that Barry George should be released. He is a pervert and a dangerous one.
Oh, and for the record...I believe him to be guilty as hell.

dylan said...

Hi Viv,

Glad you got some rest!

I also believe that half of the fun of the holiday is seeing the children enjoy themselves. I used to love our camping trips where we'd all muck in. The kids collect wood for marshmallow sticks in the evenings and we'd all sit there happily toasting away, gazing at the stars & chatting, playing tag and frisbee! It's such a cosy feeling when we all drop off to sleep too to the sound of muted murmurs of other sleepy campers! We used to save one night of the week away, usually the last night to have the luxury of eating out somewhere nice and not have to wash up in the cold! Many happy memories :-))))

xx

Unknown said...

Hiya Dillie

You conjure up happy memories of when my children were little and we also used to go camping. As you say in the evening it was just great entertainment, sitting laughing with friends and relatives, cooking on the barbecue, drinking the local cider and watching the children play, very safely under our watchful eyes. I remember one camp site in S Wales that was on a big slope. My boys found an old tyre and would just keep rolling this down the hill and chasing it. As long as children have their parents right nearby they are always very happy children. Unlike Kate McCann, we felt no need to announce to the whole world our children "had the best day of their life". We tried to make every day a great day, how can a child have such a great day with a mom who has no patience and just wants to dump her children at the creche or in bed and leave them, you are fooling no one, Kate!

Unknown said...

Mind you Dill, if someone suggested I went camping now I would tell them where to get off! But young parents with young children clearly find this a great joy as I did myself, now I need a hotel with every comfort!

Do tell us what the Sphynx, is looking at!

I know, but won't spoil it for those who don't, because I don't know if I am being wound up ;o)))

Dyl

Your camping holidays sound fun.

When our children were very young we had a static caravan in Wales. We all have such happy memories of our times there.

Even then, which was well over 20 years ago our children were more than welcome in restaurants, mind you they were well behaved even if I say so myself.

We were in a pub recently and I cannot tell you how many children were running around screaming, the staff were beside themselves.

What were the parents doing! nothing, they were so into themselves and the vino :o))

Oh good, Claudia.

The psychics have given the name of the guy with the funny accent, the location of his rented room (don't tell me he paid in cash) and the location of Maddie's body to the police. So by tomorrow afternoon her remains will have been recovered and shortly thereafter the case will be solved. Finally.

Don't see the pros jumping on this report with much glee. I mean Rosie still has a gut feel that Maddie's coming home soon.

Unknown said...

Hiya Di

I am not sure if I will venture to Cairo, it depends how hot it is!

I have no idea what the Sphynx is looking at but you have intrigued me now:-))

After I wrote that about our camping hols when the children were little (and also caravanning of course) it did occur that I was a very young mum, having my first child just before 20 and the last when still only 25. Kate clearly is a much older mum than usual and I am sure that all added to the stress and strains of trying to cope with little ones, which I do not think older women are so at home with:-) I think there is a mentality that seems to think it is a great idea to get a life before having children, but to me my children were and always have been, very much my life. That, I suppose, is where the fundamental difference lies. I think in people who choose to wait so late before having children, there is a resentment that we have clearly seen in Kate and Gerry that the children impinge on their me time. Maybe this could explain why we get some very unhappy children from older parents. I was so laidback and energetic when my children were young, I could literally play with them and nothing phased me or stressed me out!

Claudia

I think that report in the DE is repugnant and clearly has overtones of the truth, are they back to having a go at the poor gardener. When in Egypt I will have to see if I can feel the vibes and bring this chap to book!

I am sorry if this sounds a bit racist but the Americans are renowned for producing programmes (and not just that) that can be in the worst possible taste, this is a good example!

Thank you Mr Levy. Would you mind if I shoved this in Rosiepoops' pipe and forced him to smoke it?

Nothing in common with Maddie
By Duarte Levy

António Pragal Colaço, the lawyer defending the Lisbon-based Polícia Judiciária (PJ) inspectors who have been accused by the public prosecutor of having tortured Leonor Cipriano, told journalists that his clients will be tried “for a political reason”.

Inspectors Leonel Marques, Pereira Cristóvão and Paulo Bom are accused of torture. The fourth, António Cardoso, is accused of falsifying documents for having allegedly lied in the report of what had happened to Joana’s mother.

Joana’s mother has never accused Gonçalo Amaral - the only inspector from the Algarve PJ headquarters - of aggression, as several British media have claimed in an attempt to draw a parallel between the Cipriano and the Madeleine McCann cases. The inspector, who is still waiting to hear whether he will face trial or not, is being heard in court for not having reported the alleged attack.

However, despite the fact that Gonçalo Amaral coordinated the investigation, his lawyer, Antonio Cabrita, considers that he does not have “the obligation to know everything”. As he pointed out, if this were the case, then the PJ’s national and assistant national directors would also have to be charged.

Following the preliminary session last Monday at the court in Faro, the judge, Ana Lucia Cruz, has ten days to decide which inspectors will face trial and for what charges.

While Leonor Cipriano, sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of her daughter, claims to have been attacked and tortured by three Lisbon inspectors, the PJ has always affirmed that Joana’s mother wanted to commit suicide by throwing herself from the top of the stairs.

The lawyer of the three inspectors accused of torture made reference to a French physician’s report on Diana’s death in Paris in 1997, which confirmed that injuries to the princess’s eyes and face were caused as a result of her car accident. This thus reinforces the possibility that the bruises on Leonor Cipriano’s face could have resulted from her suicide attempt, as the inspectors have always claimed.

Joana’s death

Joana Isabel Cipriano Guerreiro was eight years old the day she disappeared. Her mother and her uncle were tried and sentenced for her death despite the fact that the body was never found.

One month after Joana’s disappearance, the PJ’s national director decided to send three inspectors to Faro to find Joana. By this time her mother and uncle had already confessed to the crime, but had not revealed where her body was. Leonor and João Cipriano were again questioned, but revealed nothing further concerning the body’s whereabouts.

The enquiry revealed that João, Joana’s uncle, is a manipulator and is violent under the influence of alcohol. On the day his niece disappeared, he had spent the afternoon drinking. João and Leonor are part of a family that people in the neighbourhood describe as very strange, with an alleged history “of sexual relationships between the children (brothers and sisters) and their parents, domestic violence and possible consanguinity.”

According to the enquiry, João had had a sexual relationship with both his twin sister, Anabela, and with Leonor, whose mother had forced her into prostitution. At the time of the event, Leonor had three children living with her (including Joana) and a fourth one with whom she was no longer in contact.

To explain their crime, João and Leonor Cipriano stated that Joana had seen them having sex and threatened to report it to her stepfather. The PJ did not accept this explanation as their enquiry pointed to the fact that Joana loved her mother and would probably have kept quiet about the incident.

The investigation concluded that João had raped his niece in front of her passive mother, and that they both beaten the child, thus causing her death. This would explain why they hid the body: João preferred to admit that he had killed Joana rather than to say that he had raped her. Without the body there would be no possibility of proving rape.

João Cipriano admitted aggressing Joana, first to the inspectors and later to his lawyer, and that she “remained on the floor without moving”. However, while the mother pretended to search for her daughter with her boyfriend, he also admitted that he was the one who chopped up the body, hid it in a car that was to go to a scrap-yard, which was then taken to Spain where it was burned and compacted.

This is the account that João Cipriano gave to the inspectors and repeated the next day in the presence of his lawyer. But when they asked him whether he had abused his niece, he answered indignantly: “I didn’t harm her, I just killed her.”

Forensic scientists found the sandals that her mother had said Joana was wearing at the time of her disappearance in the little girl’s home. They also found traces of her face and her hands on the walls, which confirmed her uncle’s statements. Traces of blood were found on the floor and in the refrigerator where João said he had kept the body before moving it to the car. Biological traces - possibly of sperm - were found in Joana’s bed and in a pair of the child’s underwear.

Thinking that João had already confessed, Leonor admitted the facts during her interrogation, and then turned to a photograph of Joana that was stuck on the wall, asking her for forgiveness.

She allegedly then became uncontrollable and shouted that she wanted to kill herself. It appears that the inspector was still busy writing the interrogation report when he heard shouting. According to this inspector, his colleagues told him that Leonor had attempted suicide by throwing herself down the stairs. She was examined by a doctor and then remanded in custody.

The following day the police received an anonymous phone call informing them that people inside the prison were trying to convince Leonor to say that she had been attacked by the inspectors: the prison director sent a letter with photographs of Leonor to the national director of the PJ and to the press, accusing the inspectors of aggression.

A letter sent by another prisoner contradicts this version: she affirms that, while in prison, Joana’s mother had said that she had fallen down the stairs but that after a meeting with the prison director, she changed her version and said instead that she had been tortured and that she hoped to receive damages.

Despite several confrontations with the inspectors, Leonor Cipriano was unable to make any positive identification. The public prosecutor nonetheless decided to proceed with the lawsuit, even though he admitted that he, himself, could not guarantee that the inspectors being charged had anything to do with the alleged assault or whether any such assault had even actually taken place.

The inspectors’ lawyer and Carlos Anjos, president of the Association of Criminal Investigation Staff consider the public prosecutor’s decision to be politically motivated.

Yet scum like RP treat her like a wronged woman...

Joana and Madeleine were far more imortant than the idiots they had as parents..

Keep defending the indefensible the posts by idiot Pros will be the downfall of their heros....

They say peadophiles post here I dont think so then I think my neighbours are all decent people as well you never know when you are in the company of evil scum.

However from the defence of Leonor I have to ask my self just what do children mean to any of them do they think neglect and murder of a small child is ok and the world should have sympathy with the evil scum and the child should be forgotten?

Hi all,

I had a lovely time with my daughter and hubby last night. I am so glad that we do not have the same parenting style (or should I say lack of) as some fops of this country do. You know the fops who try and pass off child neglect as the British Culture. Well our table was booked for 8.15pm we left our house at approx 7.40 ish. The restaurant is only about 15 mins walk from our house. As we had plenty of time to get there we took the long road and walked slowly and played word and math games with our daughter. Well would you believe it at the restaurant there were including our child, 14 children. At the table in front of us there was a family of 6. Mum, Dad and 4 adorable little boys aged approx 2 - 7 yrs. You know the more I think of those tw*ts who neglected their children and their excuses I realise what an atrocious pair they are. This excuse in particular. They nearly took the kids with them but they did not have a buggy and it was too far to walk. Well what about the parents the world over who have carried their children and children who have carried their siblings etc and belongings over mountainous terrain in appalling weather etc to escape to safety or had to walk miles for drinking water etc. I am sure they never thought, you know we don't have buggy why don't we just p*ss off leave them it really is much easier!
