MARTIN SMITH ASKED "IS SHE ASLEEP" ??

Hi all,

As further reports emerge concerning the Irish witness Martin Smith and his family who saw a man matching Gerry McCann on 3 May I thought it would be helpful to post this very interesting article I found posted by Paulo Reis from Sol on 5 August, last year.

As you will know, it has always been my belief that Gerry McCann carried Madeleine off that night and realising he had been spotted got Jane Tanner to make up the sighting where she gave a description matching Gerry, initially saying he was Northern European and had short dark hair but then when Gran Cooper came up with her e-fit stating, well actually, yes he was just like that..he has morphed into the distinctly swarthy man with long hair and frightening teeth. I have read that thanks to Gran Cooper the PJ were forced to investigate this and wasted a huge amount of time and resources upon it. It really is heartbreaking that the McCanns and their team have quite deliberately given them so much wasted work which was clearly never going to find Madeleine.

When reading through this however what really upset me is the thought of just why would Jane Tanner state that the man was carrying the child in what she confessed on Panorama was a very odd way limply in open arms across the body..this is how you would carry a dead child, because if you held the child up against your body in the normal way the head would flop down. As will be seen in this report Martin Smith even said to this man, is she asleep, but the man put his head down and ignored him. Hardly friendly holiday behaviour!

Also, I had not previously realised that the GNR had deployed their own dog for several hours in the McCann apartment just before the arrival of the British dogs and this dog also marked Madeleine's death in that apartment and the British dogs confirmed this. Not long back I reported that this dog had passed out as a fully trained dog (I am assuming it is the same one judging by the description of it). We now have it confirmed that death was marked in the McCanns bedroom, behind the sofa in the living room and in the flower bed. As will be seen here, back in August 2007 it was realised the body had been moved in the apartment. I suppose the question is where did she die? It would seem to me to be in the McCann's bedroom and then perhaps moved to just behind the sofa near the patio door for removal. Gerry has even remarked how quiet it was normally and he you would not expect to bump into anyone, but unfortunately for him he bumped into Wilkins and I believe he also bumped into Martin Smith and his family. The fact that there are other members of Mr Smith's family who have given evidence will corroborate his evidence and make it much more powerful. If Madeleine was carried openly like this by Gerry then it would seem she did not have serious and visible injuries which again would seem to point to over-sedation. I recall there were early reports of a syringe being found in the McCann's bedroom but do not know whether that is accurate. When taken with the fact that two nights before Madeleine was reported crying by Mrs Fenn and her young visitor and the night before Kate even admits Madeleine and Sean were crying, the fact that they went and left them again can only lead to one conclusion IMO. They made sure none of the children would interrupt their fun again, fatally for Madeleine. It is simply heartbreaking and I am appalled at what a wicked liar Jane Tanner is, she can sue me if she wants, it will not stop me saying it!!

This report also confirms the factual basis for the claims made by Portuguese detectives that little Madeleine was dumped at sea. Such wickedness is very hard to comprehend. That little Madeleine could not even have a decent burial, she was just dumped. Truly terrible. For Leicester Police to go and interview Martin Smith and family and for them to then fly out to Portugal it says it all really as to how seriously they viewed his evidence and he has no reason to lie about such a serious matter. They have his evidence and I feel this talk of the PJ failing to re-interview him as though it was somehow fatal to their investigation is just pure propaganda!

The investigations have returned to their initial course.
Portuguese and British police search for the body of the child in the surroundings of Praia da Luz.
By Felícia Cabrita (felícia.cabrita@sol.pt) and Margarida Davim (magarida.davim@sol.pt)Weekly "Sol" (Original version, in Portuguese)Translated by: Mark
“There are strong signs” that Madeleine, the English child that disappeared from Praia da Luz almost one hundred days ago, “is dead”, police sources have told Sol. The 180º turnaround that the investigation by the Policia Judiciaria (PJ) from Portimao seems to have done in the past few days, even led the Attorney General, Pinto Monteiro, to postpone the making of an interview that had been requested by British media chain BBC – an interview that would be focusing on the fact that, so long after Maddie’s disappearance, the authorities still remain without real clues concerning her whereabouts.Although an official source from the PGR justified the postponing of the interview with “agenda issues”, the moves by the PJ and some elements from the British police during these last days – accompanied by two dogs, in Praia da Luz – seem to indicate that the investigation is now centred on the McCann family and their group of friends. Sol could find out that the English dogs are trained for different tasks. One, to detect human remains originating from dead flesh, and the other one to detect human blood or fluids. A specialist that was contacted by Sol explains that the technique of these animals rests on scientific bases, and that while “one of the dogs can distinguish between natural death or death by accident that does not involve bloodshed, the other one can diagnose whether someone died a violent death, with bloodshed or other spilled fluids”.Tuesday night, a black and white cocker spaniel that is trained to detect death, spent several hours in the apartment that the McCann family occupied in the Ocean Club resort, and from where Maddie disappeared on May 3. According to sources within the investigation, the dog marked the death of the child inside the apartment. On the dogs’ trailThe English dogs do not contradict the clues that were detected by the sniffer dog that GNR sent to the location, on the day following the English girl’s disappearance. It’s an animal that only follows odours, and that “detected the movement of the child from the room to another point inside the apartment”, according to a source with the Guarda. The same source said that “based on that signal, it was not possible to conclude whether the child was alive or dead – because a sniffer dog will smell both the living and the dead”. Yet, outside the house, both through the windows that faced the Tapas restaurant – where the McCanns had dinner with their seven friends – and through the main door, “the dog lost the trail, as if the child had exited, for example, rolled up in a blanket”, that source said. A team from Sol, on the terrain for the last two weeks, could observe the work of the cocker spaniel from the British police, performing several diligences along the water in Praia da Luz and in a nearby valley. The animal’s path, on Wednesday night, seemed to test the deposition from several witnesses that were heard by the PJ in late May – namely an Irish family that have been living in Luz, and who, on the day that Maddie vanished, reportedly crossed ways with a man that carried a child that seemed to be asleep. According to their deposition to PJ, Martin Smith, his wife and his children, after leaving the Kelly bar, which is located approximately 400 metres from the Ocean Club, around 9.50 / 10.00 pm, saw an individual described as Caucasian, measuring 1.70 – 1.75 m, walking towards the beach. The Irish man told Sol that he knew Robert Murat (the only arguido in the process) visually for years – and also remembered seeing the Anglo-Portuguese man in a bar that evening, “already a bit intoxicated”. Therefore, the Irish dismissed the possibility that the person he saw carrying a child could be Murat: “If it was him, I guarantee to you that I would have recognized him”.Concerning the clothes the man he saw on that night was wearing, Smith only refers the “beige trousers”, given the fact that his upper body was hidden by the child’s body, which was not covered. It is curious that one of the elements that formed the group of Maddie’s parents’ friends, guaranteed to PJ several days before Smith was heard, that - at a moment when she left the table to check on the group’s children - she had crossed ways with a man that was wearing trousers that fit the description that was also made by the Irish man. That individual was also carrying a sleeping child. And the witness, who even managed to see what pyjamas the child was wearing, just “thought it was strange that the child was barefoot and uncovered”. This witness said it would be 9.15 pm.Direct access to the PMAccording to the course the PJ from Portimao is now conducting the investigation, and considering the trail that the British police’s cocker spaniel tracked along the sea shore, the individual would have descended to Praia da Luz, where he could have disposed of Maddie’s body. Sol knows that the English team contacted João Alveirinho Dias, a professor at the University of Algarve and a specialist in oceanography, in order to collect information about the sea’s dynamics and the beach area where everything may have happened. The investigator, who was not briefed about the context of the police inquiries, told “Sol" that he was consulted on “the sand movements, where they come from and where they go to”. The police investigation has therefore, and according to our sources, returned to its initial course, and it becomes increasingly clear, as Sol had reported previously, that there is no proof against Murat.Yet, the British media continue to point a finger at the Anglo-Portuguese man, although the criminal investigation has returned to clues that relate to the group of friends of Madeleine’s parents. A journalist with the Daily Express – who has repeatedly contacted Sol searching for new information on this case – recognized this week that it is “difficult for an English newspaper to adopt a critical tone concerning Madeleine’s parents”. The Daily Express cited, in one of its last reports, the news that have been published by Sol, describing them as a “hate campaign” against the McCanns. The same journalist ended up confessing that “it’s the only way we can transmit your data”. Sol knows that Gerry McCann has regular contact with Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister. Clarence Mitchell – who was the first spokesman for the McCanns and is now in the press cabinet at Nº 10, Downing Street – confirms those contacts. “I know there is a communication line between Gerry and Gordon Brown. I know they talk. But I don’t know what they talk about, because those are informal conversations”, he clarified, further adding: “The Madeleine case is treated whenever there are bilateral meetings between Portugal and the United Kingdom. Gordon Brown is sensitive to the case and wants it solved quickly”.Translated by: Mark 04.08.2007

Up late tonight as I just don't feel tired, for once, and everyone has gone to bed!!

I just had a read on the dark side. Poor Rat. Rat posted something on the 3As and it got taken so badly out of context that she was accused of anti semitism. (I think that this is what Docmac was talking about). Troll has decided that it's a really good idea to make an example of her by dedicating a whole new thread to it under the title of "double standards and hypocrisy".

It appears that she is clutching at very shaky straws just because a couple of posters on 3As took offence because they misread her and formed their own (and I would say, horrific) conclusions.

It is very unfair on Rat and I feel very sorry for her. I'd hate to be accused of having thought such thoughts when you know that you didn't.

Have a read folks. Newest thread there.

I would just like to say to Rat: If you are reading, I know very well that you didn't mean or try to imply what you are accused of.

I can just see the smug smile on a certain person's (or thing's) face, and it has nothing but malice and evil behind it.

God, bl**dy nasty piece of work.

Gerry's blog day 45 where Argentina is the first country listed as participating in his campaign. How odd that a year later we see this report with all these, ahem, sightings in that area! A control freak, a narcissist, an egotist, announcing on his blog "tomorrow will be a family day" and the next day..not much on the "campaign" front as it was a "family day". Well to normal parents with young children, every day is a family day and they have no need to say so! Stating on day 45, Maddie WILL be missing on day 50, one of his "planned events" and I have to say the images of those two on the beach with their balloons launching their massive fund raising venture was revolting. Happy little children play with balloons.. "Good news Maddie was not found!" I can see why ROB saw parallels with Mengele and how weird he eluded capture in Argentina of all places. If you read about this Jekyll and Hyde character who could be effusively pleasant at one moment and then fly into a rage at another and you look to the right at those pictures of Gerry McCann, the similarities are not really so hard to spot...it is the personality style and propensity for evil, not that I would expect the likes of Supertroll to absorb such abstract concepts! Killing your own child and then cashing in, demanding the police do as he says, praying on the altruistic nature of the public to believe his garbage, the garbage of a man who always confidently advised about long-term "media events" to keep up a high profile media interest in missing Madeleine. Well done to ROB to have the courage to compare like for like, the deeds of Mengele are far worse but the character is entirely similar and that is what she was so clearly saying.

How did he feel it was significant or relevant to tell us they "managed an early morning run". I can guess why this man, who never bothered with church felt the need to mention that though!

Day 45: 17/06/2007

Kate and I managed an early morning run before church.

The first event of our longer term campaign will be on Friday 22nd June- this will mark the 50th day Madeleine will be missing. We will be launching green and yellow balloons from at least 50 centres worldwide to mark the fact that we are still searching as are other parents of missing children. Countries that are partcipating so far are Argentina, El Salvador, USA, Canada, Ireland, UK, The Netherlands, Germany, Portugal (Kate and I in Praia da Luz), Spain, South Africa, Kenya, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. . Any other countries that wish to partcipate can download information from the website.

COPS PROBE NEW MADDIE SIGHTING
ABOVE: Police are investigating the possible sighting14th May 2008 By Jerry Lawton POLICE were last night probing a possible sighting of Madeleine McCann on a plane bound for Brazil.

A passenger insists the missing five-year-old was on a flight to São Paulo six weeks ago.

Interpol officers were last night investigating the claims, along with private eyes hired by the McCanns.

There have been five other reported sightings of Madeleine in Brazil. And witnesses claim to have seen her in Argentina and Chile.

Last night the McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell said the couple were awaiting official reports on the new sighting.

He said they were “grateful” to the public for keeping up the hunt more than a year after Madeleine’s disappearance.

While her GP mum Kate, 40, and heart consultant dad Gerry, 39, from Rothley, Leics, are convinced she is still alive they are refusing to get their hopes up.

The claimed sighting was reported to Interpol by a foreign embassy in Brazil.

Interpol’s Brazilian chief Jorge Pontes confirmed they were following up the lead.

He said: “We have a witness insisting they saw the child on a flight to São Paulo.”

A first reported sighting of Madeleine in Brazil came just eight days after she vanished from her parents’ holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May last year.

A man calling himself Mark phoned authorities in England claiming he had seen her with a woman at a book fair near Rio de Janeiro.

Police looked into the claim but could not trace the girl.

If Madeleine is in São Paulo police face a massive task tracking her down.

The city has a population of nearly 11million – the fifth biggest on the planet.

And the airport, where Madeleine was reportedly spotted, has connecting flights to hundreds of other countries.

Last night Mr Mitchell said the McCanns’ own invest-igators, from Spanish detective agency Metodo 3, were separately probing the sighting.

He said: “There have been a handful of possible sightings of Madeleine in South America. Some have been reported, others have not.

“Kate and Gerry have been informed about this.

“They are neither pinning their hopes on it or getting depressed about it.

“They are waiting to hear something formal down the line either from police in that country or their investigators

“There have been a number of possible sightings of Madeleine around the world, including in Chile and Argentina.

“While Kate and Gerry are grateful to the public for remaining vigilant, they cannot invest their emotions in every reported sighting.”

Possible sightings in at least nine other countries have so far led to nothing.

Witnesses claim to have seen Maddie in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Belgium, Bosnia, France, Malta, Australia and even in Dorset, England, three months ago.

In most cases, blonde girls of a similar age to her have been traced and ruled out.

In the others, trails followed by police and private detectives have gone cold.

I wonder if the mystery caller Mark,in the above report, was the one and only Mark55, always a mine of useless information..

I recall Mark55 claiming that his son was going to med school in Leicester and was going to meet Gerry McCann, as he was studying coronary care, what an exciting accolade, or at least Gerry would think so! Personally, I have to say Gerry, I would not consider it an honour, more a horror!

Morning

One of the many things I have never understood about the Find Madeleine Campaigne is the sightings of her on planes or in ports.

The McCann's have banged on and on about their poster campaign and how well it was doing yet they never thought to contact all airlines and customs??? How many cabin crewe have come forward to say they had seen her how many times have they alerted customs to the fact Madeleine McCann may well be on thier flight? A plane is the perfect place to contane her once on a plane you basically in a line from boarding to disembarking you wait in line and customs can request an interview with anyone they wish to speak to and you cant refuse.

Yet no one has been stopped and then sightings are reported long after the plane has landed. I am sure anyone with a child would not mind being pulled into an office and proving the child with them was theirs (every parent would hope someone would do the same if their own child was missing)yet nothing...

Also planning the year anniversary way back near the start of this tragedy was odd yet he had such big plans???

For all the money they have to spend on looking for her they dont seem to have any idea of how to spend it M3 have done nothing apart from make false promises and the poster campaign has been useless as well. I went abroad twice last year and my friends and family who all visited diffrent places never saw a single poster at airports or in towns so where were they?

docmac said...

Hi Dylan

Yes, that is what I was alluding to. I read that thread on 3A and actually cringed when I read the rubbish spewing from the posters named 'Bernard' and 'sans souci'.

The logic behind accusing a fellow Jew of being anti-Semitic(!!) for drawing parallels between McCann and Mengele's personality traits or looks would appear to be seriously flawed. However I don't see it that way at all. I just feel they saw it as another opportunity to try to discredit Rat. I think she handled the trolls admirably.

By the way there is a girls' school here called Sans Souci. When I was still at school we used to refer to it as 'Come screw me' or 'Pick 'n Pay' as the girls that attended the school were regarded as easy pickings, though some required a small bribe (a free condom was usually sufficient). I remember a very pissed off young Jewish girl that attended that school...

Quite how poorly Mr Troll has misinterpreted the situation is beyond me. What I do find interesting is that he has always claimed to be neither 'pro' nor 'anti', just interested in stopping nasty bloggers in their tracks. On this occasion his post is sprinkled with references to 'us' and 'our side'. Hmmm...

Hi Hope, have a good day. I must be off now.

ROTB,

I have not read the thread Dylan/Docmac mentioned, could not find it. As usual when they lash out at posters I believe it is a strong indication that there could be crisis in La La Land. The article re Clarice not abandoning the McC ship .....imo..... could he be getting ready to jump or could he be getting pushed. Perhaps a big, big pay rise could keep him, you know give him a strong financial footing for the future, not making money out of missing M and the situation she may or may not find herself in, no not all! Disgusting if true, imo.

Viv/Bath Theory,

Thanks for the reassuring posts. I do not think they will avoid charges either.

Robert Murat has settled a claim for damages with a number of British newspapers over allegations of his involvement in the Madeleine McCann inquiry.

Mr Murat will be in the High Court in London on Thursday to receive apologies from the newspapers.

Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said Mr Murat has settled with the lawyers of eight newspapers.

It is believed however that he was looking to sue 10 newspapers.

He added that Mr Murat was expecting to get a number of apologies read out in court.

"I'm told there was speculation about a figure of £2m he was claiming," Brunt said.

"As I understand it, he's expecting to get £250,000 to £500,000."

Dear MumFromHell,

the reason why I'm PMSL (and I'll continue to do so because unlike some I haven't had life sucked out of me) is because I was picturing your cult leader going red in the snout, seeing its blood pressure going through the roof and screaming and pulling its hair while someone called the mental house people. Have you read the its posts on Murat? ROTFLMAO.
P.S: Yes, Murat is an arguido and I am certain there are reasons for it. Especially because that way he cannot talk. And truth be told, your heroes could have learnt a lot from him regarding their public performance. Anyway, the fact that Murat's daughter didn't go missing because he never left her in a foreign country, alone in an unlocked apartment while he was eating, drinking and laughing with his friends whom he is so much into, also makes me feel a bit more empathy for him. As far as I know Murat did not comit any crimes. The McCanns broke the law when they abandoned their children to have fun. And Madeleine has paid the ultimate price.
And of course, the fact that some of the 'friends we are so much into' put him on the scene and incriminated him are also one of the reasons why I'm PMSL. And I'll be PMSL a lot more next time it happens. :-))))
By the way, we are all waiting for all of them to sue Portuguese newspapers. Because that would be f***ing 'intresting'. Tee hee hee

I am sure we will never forget the Pros led by Rosiepops/Christabel on the Daily Express calling him a paedophile as his apparent motivation for snatching little Madeleine. Ola querida Claudia

Well it is interesting that Clarence is struggling to put himself on a firm financial footing by acting pro-bono for the parents of two children who were murdered, he wants to be paid and no doubt will ultimately tell us when it is confirmed once and for all, that Madeleine was murdered, that he was not acting for Kate and Gerry, oh no, he was representing little Madeleine, and of course keeping this on a "firm financial footing", just like her adoring parents!

Yoohoo, MumFromHell, there is a lot about this case worth laughing. Have you looked at CM? Have you watched the pathetic press conference where he displayed the pathetic portrait of the big teeth 'abductor'?

Respect? You really should be ashamed of yourself, lady (???). What about if you started showing your respect by acknowledging the disgusting neglect and contempt Madeleine, Sean and Amelie were subjected to? What about telling your fellow pro friends that defending convicted child murderers (three at least: leonor ciprinao, joão cipriano and Rachel Charles's killer) is not exactly a good way to show respect for Madeleine who, for those who believe she was really taken, could well have been a victim of the same kind of sick monsters some of you defended in your urge to excuse two self confessed child neglecters? Poor Madeleine. She wasn't important enough before and she still isn't important enough now. Even after 'vanishing' her parents are still the priority.

Hiya ICTOAN

Thanks for the link to the article which I post below. It seems to me that precisely what consular assistance you get when involved in problems with the death of a child in a foreign country is a very subjective matter dependent upon a lot of circumstances. Firstly of course, it depends on how good the consular staff are in the location. Secondly of course that is two instances we have heard of where police initially seek to deny that the victim has suffered a violent death. Exactly the same happened in Goa. Clearly consular staff can only report to the parents what they are told by the police. Kate and Gerry had the advantage of actually being there and if there is a couple who know how to push buttons to make sure they get their rights then certainly Kate and Gerry fit the bill. He was obviously lobbying government ministers including Gordon Brown and the Foreign Secretary personally, not everyone is quite so pushy!

Secondly it is interesting this report confirms that of course we cannot dictate to a foreign police force how they investigate a crime that happened in their country. Again it is interesting to compare this statement with Kate and Gerry's supporters insisting the British Police should have immediately took over. This report confirms of course the foreign country can ask for assistance of British Police and it is abundantly clear this is what happened in Kate and Gerry's case with Gerry pointing out on his blog at the end of May 07 "Senior British officers here from the outset working on the case". The fact is the McCanns have always been in the frame and they knew it!! No police officer would be blind to the fact that in any case where a child mysteriously dies or disappears the parents are the prime suspects because the statistics confirm that about 95 per cent of the time, they are the culprits! Gerry and Kate pushing all those buttons to try and get themselves out of trouble does not change anything and consular staff were clearly reported to have warned the Foreign Office about the serious concerns about this couple given their reaction and ongoing conduct.

Again, they were doing their job in a responsible way. It is interesting the British Consulate who by all accounts was extremely good at her job has now stepped down. I believe she will be a witness in proceedings against Kate and Gerry McCann. It is a real misnomer to continue to suggest our government are seeking to prevent this. Was the Chief Constable of Leicester Police trying to help the McCanns when he went to the High Court to oppose them having access to the police file, of course not!

Why would any government officials wish to see such a couple, quite literally get away with murder, of course they do not!

Foreign office accused over response to daughter's death
By Ruth Lumley

The parents of a young woman found dead in mysterious circumstances in Argentina were showed a "lack of understanding and support" by the Foreign Office, according to a Sussex MP.

Eastbourne MP Nigel Waterson said the Foreign Office (FCO) and consular staff had provided "conflicting information" to Alison and Kevin Hill, whose daughter Laura died last October.

Tory Mr Waterson told MPs: "At times during this case it has escaped me why we bother to have diplomatic representation in a foreign country at all."

advertisementDuring a Westminster Hall debate, Mr Waterson said Mr and Mrs Hill had originally been told their daughter, a 25-year-old dental nurse, had been found dead on a park bench in Buenos Aires.

Miss Hill had been in Argentina on a "South American adventure", Mr Waterson said, and her parents were initially told that she died of natural causes.

But a "contradictory" autopsy report in November revealed that Miss Hill had been found in the first floor hallway of an apartment building.

Mr Waterson said: "She had suffered extensive bruising on various parts of her body. Other tests also suggest she may have been interfered with sexually."

He said consular officials wrote to the parents but "mentioned nothing about the post-mortem examination reports or the conflicting information coming from Argentina".

Mr Waterson said "Even though the report strongly suggested that Laura did not die from natural causes, as far as I am aware the Foreign Office did nothing to press for a more thorough investigation in Argentina."

Miss Hill's body was repatriated in December without her organs "despite constant reassurances from all sides" that they would be sent back as well.

This prevented a Sussex coroner from completing a second post-mortem examination, though an inquest has been opened and adjourned.

A toxicology report then indicated that Miss Hill had a "lethal dose" of cocaine in her body when she died.

Mr Waterson said: "I am told the dose was so high that it is unlikely Laura could have administered it herself."

He added: "The Foreign Office have not been as helpful as they could have been.

"They have not pressed for a meaningful investigation into Laura's death.

"And they have left the most important questions surrounding Laura's death unanswered."

But Foreign Office Minister Kim Howells said he was "satisfied" consular staff had provided Mr and Mrs Hill "with all the assistance they properly could during this very difficult time".

Mr Howells said: "They have provided information to Mr and Mrs Hill in order for them to make their own decisions and they have relayed information to and between Mr and Mrs Hill and the Argentine authorities in a timely manner and have never sought to mislead or impede in any way.

"It is not for us to request that a foreign government invites British police to participate in an investigation into the death of a British national, nor can we seek a speedier investigation for a British national than would be available to a local person or any other national.

"We would certainly not countenance doing such a thing if requests were made from a foreign government to our Government.

"And we can convey what information we are given to the family."

He added: "I have spoken with our ambassador in Argentina - who is a very fine ambassador - to be sure that we have done all that we properly could and I remain satisfied that this is the case."

Outside the Commons, Mr Waterson accused Mr Howells of a "complacent reply".

Mr Waterson said: "Some people seem to think that our only job is to pass information back and forth.

"If that is our policy for deaths abroad then that should be changed."

He added: "Hard working people who pay their taxes are entitled to something a bit more sensitive and supportive."

Former Maddie McCann suspect wins libel case
Published: Tuesday 15 July 2008 17:46 UTC
Last updated: Tuesday 15 July 2008 17:46 UTC
A former suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, Robert Murat, has been awarded almost 700,000 euros damages in a libel case against 11 newspapers and a TV channel who claimed that he was involved in Madeleine's disappearance. According to BBC sources, the two sides agreed to the settlement which is to include a written apology.

Mr Murat, a British citizen, lives in the same resort as the McCann holiday home where Maddie went missing over a year ago. Mr Murat was questioned by Portuguese police and his villa searched soon after her disappearance. He was given "arguido" status, making him a formal suspect, although he denied any involvement.

Maddie's parents, who were also regarded as formal suspects by the Portuguese police, received a similar settlement from the British media earlier this year. Portuguese police have sent their final report on the case to prosecutors, but have found insufficient evidence to press charges.

I wonder if the last 3 words are a result of sloppy journalism or means what it says?

Just back. It's incredibly hot here. Not even a breeze at night. Too hot to go out in the afternoon unless you really have to.
I see the employees have followed CM's example and put the 'no comment' aproach into practise. :-) ROTFLMAO!

Hey Guys!

Good news about Murat. I somehow think he will be happier with the apology than the money, which is in stark contrast to two very "special" people who's names I don't need to mention! I also think that although he needs the money after his life has been ruined, he will put it to a good cause and visit his daughter etc because he loves her.

Had he been half the terrible man the pros try to say he is, I'm sure his ex wife would have jumped at the chance to slate him....only she didn't. She said she didn't believe him capable of such things and that can only mean one thing: that he is a good father and the ex realises his daughter's life would be worse without him.

One more thing - an example of the intelligent, charming, humanitarian, kindly and considerate things said from the dark side's own dear Christabel, about Mr M:

Popeye Murat was a Pedo.

Oh how eloquent and lovely you are, Christabel. You must be very proud of yourself. I feel most enlightened by your intellectual turn of phrase!

PS, can I buy 'Pedos' at most good sports shops? - my son needs some new swimming trunks for his holiday ;-)

Nite all xx

Thanks Di I have now answered your mail and Hope's.

It is great news for Robert Murat -I hope people will now stop writing vile abuse about him. It is interesting that 11 media outlets have agreed to pay him damages. Knowing how fond the McCanns are of screwing money out of people and propanganda to proclaim their innocence, how come they could only get one to admit they libelled them...very often the Daily Express were simply re-hashing the story that the Daily Mail had written the day before, of course though, Clarence did not want to fall out with the Daily Mail as well. As for other news outlets, I am sure they told the McCanns and their lawyers where to get off. No talk lately of Clarence making it his life's work to track down every internet site that dares to criticise his clients and make sure they are sued, no, he is talking instead of finding some more clients! Well if I needed any help I most definitely would not be giving him a call. What was it he said, people who find themselves in the midst of a media storm, what rubbish, he means people who create a media storm. They could not even clear off to Canada for three weeks without giving us the details and of course how tragic they could not take Madeleine!

Maybe Gerry should just realise we do not like him, are not interested in him, we do not think he and Kate are great celebrities, we think they are lowlife criminals who need locking up and shutting up. I think his over inflated ego gets in the way of him getting the message..

Darling, I heard Murat also intends to sue some of the Portuguese press. In fact, the first talks about that were even in March. However, I don't hear anything about the McCanns sueing Portuguese newspapers. After all, if the British newspapers only copied what the Portuguese newspapers wrote, what are they waiting for? Of course that Robert Murat knows that in Portugal very, very rarely are these matters settled out of court. We are very, very far from a happy sueing country and newspapers don't have much money. These cases almost always get to court. Murat knows that and the McCanns Portuguese lawyers also know it. Do you think that's why? Of course I have no idea why someone would not like to go to court...

Hiya darling

Oh I keep seeing that gorgeous pic of your lovely God Daughter Sara and was pleased to read she is doing great. I hope mom and dad got the air conditioning going for her, I read how hot you said it is now, which I guess is normal for Portgual in July. It has been a very pleasant 25 today which is certainly a change as we have had some bloody terrible weather for this time of year! My geraniums and penstemons are shouting we want sun sun sun come on!

Our own press were always camped out in PDL so how can it be said they just copied what the Portuguese newspapers wrote, I do not understand that! There again, if you are talking about Mum21 she does not understand anything really, she claims I said the McCanns should not have sued but in fact I distinctly remember explaining the legal basis for why they sued, not that she would understand of course. But in addition to standing on strict legal rights, there are also morals, but again I could not expect either Mum21 or Kate and Gerry McCann to be able to understand that. It is bizarre they are saying there is no difference as between the two. Forgive me did they forget this is Kate and Gerry's child who they dumped in bed and left alone to cry every night, what did Murat do? Perhaps the better question would be to ask what did Kate, Gerry and their friends do to him!

I recall that in fact the McCanns were going to sue a Portuguese newspaper Tal and Quai (got that wrong I know but something like that). This was in August when the allegations against them first started t hit the press. Nothing ever came of this action. I think the issue with the DE was they just went over the top, the claims about swinging etc were just scurrilous and not connected with Madeleine's disappearance at all and very clearly amounted to libel. I do not think any other paper ran that story, did they? Not sure though, it was mainly the very seedy Daily Star if I recall.

I cannot remember the exact figure but I think in UK it is something like 90 per cent of civil legal cases are settled. This is because we have some of the greediest lawyers in the world who charge such astronomical fees clients just cannot afford to take the case all the way. But Kate and Gerry always wanted to extract a settlement out of Express and clearly had enough ammunition to do so, given the swinging claims.

I think the fact Murat took on a total of 11 papers and is also possibly as you say, going against Portuguese papers as well shows that he has a proper case. Clearly the McCanns cannot sue any papers that have made fair comments about their admitted and criminal misconduct in so seriously neglecting their children, neither can they sue them for accurately reporting what the police suspect them of. They may not like that, but it is not libel!

I wish Murat every success and hope the money will at least help him and Michaela to rebuild their lives which have been ruined by the tawdry allegations against them. No one can imagine just how terribly distressing all of this must have been. The McCanns have done plenty to attract criticism, Murat just got used as the perfect Patsy as they cast the net around looking for someone to blame, even the police!

Anyway Hun, can you tell me why the McCanns did not sue the PJ for failing to find Madeleine, I just cannot understand why, did some silly lawyer say, well you can dream but I cannot see the "cause of action". Did the same lawyer have the temerity to explain to Gerry McCann, well you know Gerry you must not get angry about having to use the Find Madeleine Fund to find Madeleine, if you do not people might even say that it was fraud to ask people for money, you know they might even think it was to pay your debts and get you a nice new car etc and you would not want them to think that.

When Kate appeared on TV for the "anniversary", it did look like a Botox job, I thought. I remember saying she looks like one of those American women who is really 60 but looks 40!

There was certainly an incredible different from the lined and haggared face when saw in Brussels in April to what we saw in May! Gerry looked smug when she turned on the agonised but heavily made up face. I bet he thought, cost a packet, but it was a good marketing ploy!
