The astonishing developments followed the discovery of blood in a car the McCanns hired four weeks after Madeleine's disappearance 128 days ago, which police believe proves Mrs McCann killed Madeleine.
The allegation was dismissed as "ludicrous" by Mrs McCann's husband Gerry, while her parents said the police investigation had become "a joke".
Mrs McCann was declared a formal suspect, or "arguida" by police, who spent a second day questioning her in the Algarve town of Portimao before releasing her without charge five hours later.

Mrs McCann has been warned by her lawyer Carlos Pinto de Abreu to be prepared for the fact she might now be arrested and charged.
A family spokeswoman, Justine McGuinness, revealed that Mrs McCann had been asked outright if she had killed her daughter, and was "shocked and angry" at the allegation, which she emphatically denied.
Miss McGuinness said: "They believe they have evidence to show that in some way she's involved in the death of her daughter, which of course is completely ludicrous.

"They have suggested that blood has been found in a hire car that they hired 25 days after Madeleine was taken. How on earth could you hide a body for that long? We are in a hot climate.
"When this was put to Kate she was very taken aback. It was the first time she had heard the allegation and she actually swore at police."
Mr McCann's sister, Philomena, later revealed the plea bargain offered by detectives.

She said: "They tried to get Kate to confess to having accidentally killed Madeleine by offering her a deal through her lawyer, which was 'if you say you killed Madeleine by accident and then hid her and then disposed of the body, then we can grant you a two-year jail sentence or even less. You may get off because people feel sorry for you'."
According to one report, the police asked Mrs McCann, a doctor, whether she had sedated her daughter, leading to speculation that detectives think she may have accidentally given Madeleine an overdose.
Mr McCann, 39, expressed his own frustrationin his blog on the Madeleine campaign website, saying: "We will fight this all the way."
Police had told Mrs McCann before she went for questioning that they had 22 "difficult" questions to put to her further to the information she had given them during 11 hours of questioning on Thursday.

Docmac, I think I saw that swarthy man carrying the broom. Actually, I think he was a Moroccan. He took the broom - a good, sturdy, British broom, because he knew it would be better than those flimsy, badly made things he was used to sweeping up with. And then I heard him say in a thick, Moroccan accent that he wanted to sell the broom on the black market. It's disgusting what some of these people do. And all the while, the head of the PJ was standing right there and letting him get away with it. I think he thought there'd probably be a broom in there for him somewhere too. At least, that's what Dot next door thinks and she'd know, because she went to Portugal once and said the brooms over there were disgusting and the police that bought them were all corrupt!

It was last updated at 07:36 on December 23 2003. The libel lawyer Peter Carter-Ruck, who died on Friday, had a chilling effect on the media. He was a chancer, out for the maximum fee. And he did for freedom of speech what the Boston Strangler did for door-to-door salesmen.
Until Carter-Ruck got his teeth into the libel law, actions were infrequent and inexpensive. But from the 1950s, Carter-Ruck became the leading libel lawyer and clients sought him out. He honed his menacing letters to encourage socialites to sue for imagined slights and fashion a weapon for politicians to suppress hostile stories. He preferred the bludgeon of the writ to the rather more effective call to an editor preferred by Lord Goodman. He established the idea that libel law was complicated and merited very high fees. In the process he became very rich. "I like to bill the clients as the tears are flowing," he told me.
Libel was good to him: four homes, a Rolls-Royce and a string of yachts called Fair Judgement. But perniciously he built a libel factory, paid for by the media's legal and insurance bills. Carter-Ruck had some novel techniques. You could only settle a libel action by paying his exorbitant fees without any question of the bill being checked by the court. He hit upon the wheeze of Randolph Churchill retaining all the libel QCs to prevent them acting for Private Eye (a practice since banned) and of serial libel actions, as in the case of Princess Elizabeth of Toro (which brought us the term "Ugandan discussions").
His practice had rightwing connections. With Carter-Ruck at the helm, the firm of Oswald Hickson Collier acted for the Conservative party and the likes of Norman Tebbit and Cecil Parkinson.
In his memoirs he praised the rightwing financier Sir James Goldsmith for alleviating the injustice of the lack of legal aid with money from a foundation. He said it let solicitors assess cases in the same way as the Legal Aid Board would. However, the assessor was none other than Carter-Ruck, and his firm was paid, win or lose. The beneficiaries tended not to be widows and orphans but rightwing politicos such as Neil Hamilton, who trousered £20,000 from the BBC for a Panorama programme - Carter-Ruck's bill was £240,000.
The Goldsmith Foundation's other beneficiaries included Brian Crozier, a cold war enthusiast with intelligence links, and an official of the breakaway Union of Democratic Mineworkers who sued Arthur Scargill.
Once described as the Margaret Thatcher of defamation law, Carter-Ruck was a conviction libel lawyer. If he acted for the plaintiff, he thought it the most outrageous libel; if for the defendant, the case should never have been bought. The common thread was to extract the maximum.
Carter-Ruck had one row after another with his partners. In 1977 they tried to boot him out and after four years' litigation were successful when he decamped to another part of the same building to form Peter Carter-Ruck & Partners. Within four years all his founding partners had left, including his daughter.
I left his firm in pure Carter-Ruck circumstances. Heinemann, for whom we acted, was publishing a book about the Ford family, by Robert Lacey. I was told by Carter-Ruck that there was no conflict in our advising. Lacey sent part of the book to Henry Ford for comment. Later I found Carter-Ruck advising Ford that the book was full of libel. He proved unable to give a truthful explanation.
Cases brought by Tudor Roberts, a solicitor, and the journalist Derek Jameson illustrate the Carter-Ruck techniques. In 1985 Roberts was awarded £20,000 damages against Private Eye plus costs on the higher scale. I agreed before I left Carter-Ruck's firm that he would only pay the costs recoverable from Private Eye. Carter-Ruck, however, billed Roberts £60,000. The cost judge allowed only £18,567. My assurance was ignored. Carter Ruck wanted the lot. It was two years before Roberts was reimbursed his damages and the legal costs he had earlier paid.
Derek Jameson, as a tabloid editor, had been unwisely advised to sue the BBC over a satirical sketch. Carter-Ruck said Jameson would get £25,000-£50,000. David Eady QC advised Carter-Ruck in writing that Jameson accept the £10 that the BBC had offered in settlement plus his costs. Carter-Ruck concealed this opinion from Jameson. Jameson lost the case and was sent a bill by Carter Ruck for £41,342.50. When he learned by chance of the QC's pessimistic advice, Carter-Ruck told him a string of lies.

Thanks Zodiac and Bianca. I will pass the information on to the smaal, previously unheard of company that have been hired to search for it. They apparently found a broom some years back while searching for a missing mop, so they should be an excellent choice. Did the broom have white bristles and a very distinctive mark on the handle? Is Dot a waitress or a child minder?

Why are the PJ coming to the UK ?
It seems a completely pointless exercise for many reasons ....but .
As they have made no progress on the case since the last extension of secrecy they have no grounds to extend the secrecy .
Come to the UK , ask some questions and say you need more time to analyse the new evidence collected .Extend the secrecy . Thats why they are coming to the UK ...imo

Oh don't worry, Dot is a "granny" and a very sweet, charming, kindly old thing she is. She has about 370 grandkids, 900 cats, and voted for Margaret Thatcher at least 87 times. So she's just lovely to sit by the fire with and talk about the good ol' days, when children were seen and not heard and sent up chimneys while their parents ate roast meat and drank fine wine. Funny old coot that she is!

Kate and Gerry McCann are poised for a dramatic return to Portugal to mark the first anniversary of their daughter Madeleine's disappearance.
The couple are prepared to defy their lawyers and risk arrest in an attempt to revive the search for the four-year-old.
The McCanns, who deny any involvement in her disappearance, were named official suspects – or arguidos – by Portuguese police in September, prompting them to leave Praia da Luz, the resort where Madeleine disappeared, and return to their home in Rothley, Leicestershire.
Madeleine vanished on May 3 from her parents' holiday apartment as they dined with friends at a bar about 100 yards away.
On Monday, Portuguese detectives will fly into the UK to re-interview the friends – but not the McCanns – at police headquarters in Leicestershire.
The outcome will determine whether the couple, both doctors, return to the Algarve.
The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell said today: 'Kate and Gerry are currently deciding whether to return to Portugal. It is being discussed.
'Going to Portugal would send out the strongest possible message that Madeleine could still be alive and the search for her should continue. The family feel the focus should be on finding Madeleine.
'Next week's interviews will help in gauging the police attitude. In an ideal world they would not be arguidos and their lawyers have always warned them not to return while they have that status.
But they want to be in Praia da Luz for the first anniversary,' he said.

I thought the continuing desperate spin about how Clarence is stating this would send a powerful message of innocence, if things go well for them and they actually decided to go was worth a chat about x
He is not of course saying they are going, maybe if push came to shove, they would rather go than suffer the humiliation of being taken, complete with silver cuffs..under a European Arrest Warrant. That would be very embarassing for them, I am sure.

The McCanns can be relieved of their arguido status any time it makes no odds they have to live with the fact that they neglected their children to spend time with friends who were just as bloody selfish...
It makes no odds what happends to these two selfsih people who have jetted round the world but spent no time looking around PDL for their beautiful daughter..
They have to live with the truth whatever it is one thing is sure without the neglect she would not be missing (if that is what happend) you can pat each other on the head all you like for the McCanns...

Now let me get this straight the PJ are coming over to England in a few days so the McCanns are thinking of going over to Portugal. Is this CM’s work blurring the boundaries between what is real and what has been invented?
For example does Team McCann think charges will be made so in anticipation of this they return to Portugal? It will appear then that they went of their own volition rather than under arrest. This is a good pr tactic. Is this some kind of double, double bluff?

I am reading at the moment Gordon Burn’s book “Born Yesterday the News as a Novel” and I was just wondering about the quote from the book which I have copied below.
“There is a view of photography as being something that ‘seizes a moment in life and is its death’, and the photo gallery on the Madeleine site could be offered as proof of that. Some took the view that the sheer volume of pictures in existence showed that the parents hadn’t wanted to experience their daughter as a person so much as record her having the experiences they were fortunate enough to be able to buy.”
Could this be an inkling into the lack of emotion shown by the parents? Just a thought.

Presumably McCanns can now afford those expensive lawyers again. One of them specialises in protecting people's reputations in the media. Clarence of course seeks to control the media.
If the McCanns were arrested and taken back to Portugal that would create the most terrible pictures and media for the McCanns, they have thought of the best way out of this by suggesting they may go back "for the anniversary", but there again they may, if they think they can get away with it, that is. As they say, all depends on how these interviews go, Tanner and Co will of course give them an update as to how good or bad the situation is..
Hi everyone - I've been a bit busy today but I've tried to read as many posts as possible! Great not to have all the silly anons making foul comments!
I wont be at all surprised if K&G go back to PdL - That visit would give their celebrity status a good boost, but would it do the population of PdL any good?
And why are they still using CM (the puppet) to speak for them - it seems they have had plenty to say since returning to the UK, going by all the quotes on many people's blogs, newspapers, magazines, tv documentaries, etc! It seems they only want CM to speak for them when they want to announce something in advance - perhaps to guage reactions!
The visit to PdL if they go will no doubt help to ease their burden of guilt. I know I'm probably barking up the wrong tree but, bearing in mind the 2/3 days of non-sleep and eating after Maddie disappeared, and when I see how cool this couple are, it's almost as if they know she is safe somewhere! Parents who are really desperately worried about their daughter's whereabouts would be desolate and inconsolable to be without her not knowing just where she is and what is happening to her!

Looking at yesterday and today’s post across the blogospheres, the amount of proMcCann posters using whatever tactic they seem fit to use is phenomenal. Surely this must mean an arrest is likely as why kick up such a fuss if the pj are only going to ask some questions, return to Portugal and drop the McCanns arguido status. Although we are told by CM that none of the T7 have changed their statement I am now beginning to suspect that this is not the case and he knows it. The supporters’ panic I would have thought must mean something very detrimental to their side is afoot. Well baton down the hatches because as the hours tick by the panic will get increase.

Good point about their obvious state of panic. If they were so confident the McCanns are about to get cleared then why not leave their blog public so they can have a really good crow about it.
What they have done shows they are in a state of turmoil and need to discuss how they can cope with this situation, in private.
Meanwhile yesterday we had the sickest of tactics with one of them posting on here as Philomena claiming she ate Madeleine, they are so repugnant. I know this came from Rosie, is it very similar to her oft repeated claim that someone suggested Madeleine is inside a dog.. the working of a very sick mind in action.
I also notice that she?? is now posting on here several times a day in the last few days, something she always vowed she would not do. Not long ago even a link for Mark to go join them, so desperate are they for supporters.
Something big is about to happen and it is certainly not something they like!

CM was a journalist and what do they do every day: blur the boundaries between what is real and what has been invented. I think this is what he is trying to do and succeeding to a certain degree. However, once you know the moves the picture becomes crystal clear!
The McCanns are professional people and they will desperately need to use lawyers and all other means available for damage limitation purposes. Their careers could be over or most certainly on hold even if the are not charged.
Icantthinkofaname, thats an interesting point. I think there is a good chance if they go they will be arrested. So imo they will not take the twins.

Read the McCann’s return news and thought: - maybe they knew the weather was really great over here and they want comeback and enjoy the beach too. Sadly, wrongdoers rarely say sorry. The UK owes a debt of gratitude to Portugal for giving so much heart, time, effort and money in the pursuit of one missing English girl, neglected by her family.
So many poor children die despite the best efforts of their caring parents. It's disgraceful that one English girl from a well-to-do family has been sacrificed to her parents' nights at the bar, and now it is only strangers who seek justice for her while her 'family' defend the parents who sacrificed her.
Best wishes to you and yours, Portugal, our old ally. Persist, we must, in defending our shared values, no matter how many people sacrifice those values for their own petty, provincial, egotistical pleasure.

I bet that is true. In UK the term "burying bad news" got invented, following Tony Blair and others habit of planting items in the press to deflect attention from what was really going on, that they wanted the public to shut up about, e.g. unlawfully invading Iraq in cahoots with the megalomaniac, oil grabbing Bush.
Their campaign demonstrating what super parents they are by promoting an amber alert systems for Europe has been long in the planning process. We also have the ITV anniversary special to er really look forward to..
Meanwhile, oddly enough, during the same week, PJ and Leicester Police grill their friends with a view to prosecuting Kate and Gerry.

I find it very strange that while their friends will being questioned these parents (still suspects in the disappearance of their child )will have the oppurtunity to tell others how to protect children when they left their kids night after night alone during their holiday in PDL. Even if the Arguido status is lifted from the 3 prime suspects, how will or can the McCanns clear their name?
I fear it will not be enough in the lifting of the status of Arguido, and it is only in a court of law can all suspicions,innuendo, whatever be thrashed out. If no charges are brought after 11 months then it will be assumed by many that it was a done deal as there is no smoke without fire. The McCanns would threaten to sue everybody IMO in an effort to assuage the suspicion that would linger for a long time and all their failures would be brought to the fore again and again, failure to co-operate, children alone, pacts etc in this arcane case. A rock and a hard place.
Paulo Cristovao’s book recently reviewed by Aslabella is now featuring on Joana Morais’ blog. Cristovao’s impression of the McCanns is interesting.
“The ‘Star of Madeleine’ is harsh on the McCann couple. While the author does not spend a lot of sentences on Kate and Gerry McCann, the few that are actually dedicated to them, are unsympathetic to say the least. Mrs McCann is portrayed as a cold, tough person, and Mr McCann is pictured as a man who chooses to protect his wife, his remaining children and his way of life, when he is confronted with the deadly result of a domestic accident, rather than taking what the author considers to be the appropriate action.”
This gives an insight into how the pj perceived the Mcs personalities rather than that put into the public arena by CM. By the way any views on what a ‘domestic accident’ is?

A bit like when Kate McCann announced several months back she would not go back to a career as a GP (not that they would want her) and instead wanted to work for a childcare charity! Truly staggering..

The thing is a "domestic accident" is not a criminal offence. Children suffer terrible accidents in the home, but their parents are not held criminally liable for this, unless of course they suffered the accident whilst left alone or it can be demonstrated that the parents contributed to the death in some way e.g. by an overdose of sedative medication. A far higher standard of care would be expected of a parent who is a qualified anaesthitist/GP than any ordinary parent giving their child medication. Nevertheless an ordinary parent would still be held to have been criminally negligent for giving too high a dose.
Had Madeleine died of some genuine accident then there would have been no need to dispose of her body and fail to report this, unless that body would have provided evidence of deliberate abuse..

Viv, that’s what I thought - a domestic accident is just that an accident. Why is Paulo Cristovao suggesting this is the McCanns reason for covering up. A straight forward domestic accident is not something they would need covering up.
If he is suggesting an unintentional overdose of medication, well as you say, they were both doctors and should have known better. Imo the only way this works is if they were heavily sedating their children so they would stay quite whilst they were out. This could well have made the Mcs to cover up the death.

Hiatus hernia. So a fairly restricted diet, but nothing like as bad as I thought it would have to be.
Small treats now allowed - in fact, the hospital gave me some chocolate ice cream, so it must be good for me!

This is what I feel is most likely to have happened and would explain the twins and them not wanting them checked. Obviously post mortem would have revealed regular sedation. The growth of the hair can produce a time line for this over several months, bit like rings in a tree.
The only way I can account for the fine blood spray is if Madeleine was injected, again a reason for the poor little mite to go hide at bedtime.
If this is the case, very close to murder.

Don't mind you asking in the slightest...
...A&E prescribed some very strong anti-acid medication three weeks ago, which the doc today told me I should continue to take ad infinitum. He said they're marvellous, and can cope with practically anything you care to put into your body. However, I don't feel I want to eat much which I don't tolerate that well naturally, so will be eminently cautious, and will also experiment with taking the pills every other day.
I'm only going to continue taking them because they seem to have got rid of my asthma - which, apparently, in my case, is caused by an acid digestion. He said it was better to be on the proton-prohibitors in the acid medication, rather than the steroids in the asthma meds.
So I now have to experiment with foods to see which are bad for me, but that's about it. (I hope).

The fine blood spray – I remember a discussion on the DX about this. Dr_Val suggested the Mcs might, having found M unconscious and tried to aspirate her and this could have caused the fine blood spray.

Maybe Madeleine died from an overdose because one of the parents gave her sleeping-medicine, and then the other gave her too, unknowing that she had already been given?

I am glad you can be treated without surgery because that is always a fearful experience, as I know, but still here LOL (sorry Rosie).
I guess it is trying to figure out acidic food that may be causing a problem and produce some sort of allergic response leading to ashtma also. It is interesting but unpleasant the way you discover one thing that is wrong with has a clear link to another but can help you to learn how to put that right.
I am starting to question the amount of tea I drink and fruit I eat now!
I really do wish you well and hope you can avoid steroid medication which I know in my own case is bad bad stuff. I used to have injections in the summer to prevent allergic sun/plant reactions on my skin..then I discovered just keep out the sun a bit more and take an antihistamine. Usually is a simpler and better way, just finding it..
Steroids make you put on weight as well!

I wonder what happened to Dr Val, she was lovely and I miss her. Very good at producing dispassionate and unchallengeable facts and research. Not surprising, I think she is Uni lecturer/researcher.

Parents would not be committing a criminal offence if they administered prescribed sedative medication to their child exactly in accordance with the stated dose.
If, on the other hand, a GP had acquired medication and was giving it their child without it being prescribed and gave it in excess of the safe dose, that certainly would be a criminal offence and one for which the doctor concerned would never be allowed to practice again. As we know, in the early stages Kate announced she would not go back to her former career as a GP. This is remarkable when you think of the incredible effort involved in attaining that position in life and how highly paid it is. She as working just 2 days a week to achieve double the average salary in the UK for working a full week. Now why would she just give that up?

I was aware that UK/Europe already have an alert system in place similar to the Americans.
I think Kate and Gerry just searched around trying to find a useful bandwagon to jump on!
They have also looked a lot to the States for all manner of things that may be helpful to them. A defence attorney who successfully challenged evidence of police dogs, only trouble is they were just ordinary working police dogs, not specialists like Eddie and Keela. They have also looked to the States for one who claims low copy number DNA is not satisfactory evidence, many so called experts who have their own research and "findings" want to promote that as being more accurate. The truth is the FSS is a world leader and low copy number DNA evidence has been accepted in many other jurisdictions as clear and credible. I know it is a ltd company but they have spent a lot of money so far and not come up with anything maybe if they handed it over to a charity some good could come of all the money...

Lets be honest the McCanns are arrogant and brazen enough to return to PDL or Portugal. They have been cushioned from day one and I do not take away their grief or feelings at the loss of their child, however it happened, but they have had people speaking for them, advising them, supporting them, backing them, so I imagine they have become slightly detached from reality in their opinion of themselves. Would such a trip be wise if the Arguido satus is still in place? I think not, or perhaps its to provoke the PJ into reacting to break the hiatus?

Yup, I agree they are brazen, and divorced from reality, although I pity them for that.
I think the return to Portugal would be stage managed if it happens. It will not be for Madeleine's 'anniversary' as they crassly put it. It would be to cover up the fact that their return was compulsory; they won't return unless they are compelled to do so, in my opinion.
Arguido status has had no bearing whatsoever on co-operating with police inquiry or returning to Portugal, contrary to what their advisers have said in the media.
It's all manipulation. Now why would honest, caring, genuine parents do that?
The McCanns and their supporters are entitled to an honest, open defence in our democracy. They are not entitled to subvert due process of law, and honest inquiry, imo.

Yes time will tell. I agree about the stage management from Mr.Slick no doubt. Perhaps though the McCanns feel ultra confident that such a visit will open the gates and push the PJ and after all this time the lawyers can be let loose and the contents of the prosecutors file revealed, as they are probably sick of then tension and Arguido tag.
Interesting too what Viv said that some on the other blog maybe believe that one or other of the friends could be involved? Very strange, have they also given up on the abduction theory then?

I have just read back and see that you have been prescribed a proton-prohibitor.
My Mother suffered with the same complaint as you and found them very helpful.
I have also used them recently on a temporary basic for severe acid indigestion after the first couple of days had no problems. The course of treatment was for 4 weeks and since I have had no problems.

I think the McCanns have always been happy to be nice to their friends so long as they do as they are told.
We heard several months back, September in fact, a TAPAS member wanted to change his statement but was afraid of the backlash from Kate and Gerry given the power they have behind them. Understandable, but also understandable some of the friends will consider their own positions and not want to lie for this couple any longer. Wait for the fury to fly from Kate and Gerry when it all comes out in the wash, as we know it will. Who would want to be their "friend"? and be drawn into some wicked pact of silence about the death of a sweet little girl they all knew. Very hard to understand.
Gonna have to check out now and get on with some work, but will leave you in Claudia's capable hands if she is still here.
Otherwise will try and make periodic checks to try and remove any filth that may appear.

Thats what I find wierd, why would he do this, it is public support of them, but interesting to read this action has been questioned by other MP's, we will have to see if this is true but if so looks to me as if the Government are supporting them still, which is odd given the situation. Lizzy

I agree: it is strange, alright. Very strange.
It is the oddness of this case which ensures it will be pursued; 'not stone unturned' as Gerry McCann said, although he may discover his words backfire on his original intentions.
The whole UK Government issue, giving preferential treatment to the McCanns and their 'friends' in Portugal, supporting them without question in the UK, subverting our legal and diplomatic obligations to our European partners, undermining faith in impartial justice at home and abroad - all of that annoys me intensely.
Oh, well. Perhaps it is only when honest people are shaken out of their comfort zone that they take necessary action rather than merely chatter and natter among family and friends.
I pity Madeleine Beth McCann. I despise anyone who lies about what happened to her, and I make no apology for supporting anyone who pursues justice for her; the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

I have a fantastic book called Good Gut Healing by Kathryn Marsden, published by Piatkus. It's very explicit about the causes and treatment of all the digestive disorders in the whole world! (Most of which I have, naturally).
Lots of info about diet, food combining, stress, exercise and many other things.
I now just have to work out how I can eat more fibre for the hiatus hernia, whilst taking less fibre for a related condition!

I saw an interview with her friend today who said she is not standing by him and wants nothing more to do with him (after all they have been through with Shannon missing it must be a big wake up call for her how much she loves her children)...
If I am at home in the day there are so many people the same as them on the JK show it is astonding that they want to air their dirty laundry in public and still want to stay together when all they do is argue???
Put the children first and get yourselves sorted out is my message and somethimes the children are better off without one or the other of the parents and sometimes are better of with neither...

I can never remember a time when someone made a suspect in a crime has been allowed to be a representative of their country in any way shape or form! Something very wrong here in my opinion. Could it be so they are made to look good in the eyes of the public right now I wonder?

I think their appearance at the EU has been well considered and for whatever reasons its been okayed. I do not think that they would appear especially if they thought that they could be charged shortly. It does not fit at all, even the event organizers and agencies would not take the risk IMO. It goes against all the norms.

Very well said Leigh, there will be a combination in this case, I believe of traditional work, highlighting lies and inconsistencies and high tech evidence such as mobile phone triangulation, DNA, extraction of information for hard drives, covert surveillance through intercepts and tracking devices, psychological, psychiatric evidence..all will play a part in forming the whole of the picture.
